For those in the PacNW area (WA, OR, ID) ...GI JOES...now called 'Joes' last I checked carried the Amzoil and Mobile brand. I've used both Mobile 1 and Amzoil and have been happy.

I was told they will only stock the 5W30 T&SUV version from now on. That's what I run in my Jeep now.

If you can't find Mobil 1 T&SUV 5W40 or Delvac 1 5W40 (same stuff), Doug also recommends Shell Rotella T 5W40 which is a hydrocracked synthetic. It's ~$13/gal at Walmart. You should have no problems with any of these, plus I think he okay'd Castrol Syntec 5W50.

Doug and several other people have said that 0W40 is too thin and has to low of a HTHS for many older European cars. It is way below spec for Porsche 928/944/968, BMW M3/M5, and Audi S4/S6 from what I've read.

After the horror stories I've read about Amsoil, I would never use the stuff. I've heard Red Line engine oil is overpriced for the quality of the oil (not bad but not worth the extra money over more common alternatives). I haven't heard much about Royal Purple but what I've heard/read is good. I'm about to put a few gallons of Royal Purple's tranny and gear fluids in my Jeep.

In my experiences with Wal-mart nobody knows whats going on inside the store, maybe you should check a different one or ask to order some.

I asked at 3 Walmarts. At two the people gave me a blank stare and said "We don't carry that thar oil no more." At the third the guy said a lot of people had been asking so he checked their computer and called somebody in distribution. He sounded like he wasn't full of it. Maybe he was making it up. Maybe it's a regional change. I haven't seen it in Advance Auto or Auto Zone either. Both of them had 15W50 even when Walmart stopped carrying it for a while.

Simple answer to simple question: Use 15/50. 0/40 is not quite right for the older cars.

Age is irrelevant - read your owners manual.

I switched from 20w50 to 5w40 Rotella T synthetic in my '79. Oil pressure at idle is between 2.5 and 3 bar, pressure at 2500rpm is almost 5 bar. So far so good, engine seems to run quieter when cold -- I used to be able to hear some lifter ticks at start-up on cooler mornings. Only issue now is that a small cam tower gasket leak has reared its ugly head again after the switch.

Advanced Auto here has a horrible selection of oil, my local Wal-mart hasn't had any of that 15w-50 Mobil 1 though.

Mobil 1 0-40 is a Porsche approved oil.
