X-PIPE UPDATE AND OPTIONS 86 ON RM

I put two Flowmaster - Hushmaster II's (stainless steel) on my '82 with an '87 downpipe (with cats) and 2-1/2in SS pipes out the back with no other mufflers and I LOVE it.
It has a nice throaty growl in all gears, but not so loud that it's obnoxious. Without the cats, I'm sure it would be a bit louder.

I have found most of florida to not care about noise levels. Many, many trucks with open ehxaust around here. My exhaust is very loud. Y-pipe to a sigle FM delta 50 and out the sides. No cats or rear muffler.
Ussualy it's not how loud you are but what you're doing when loud. If the occifer can't pin you with speeding, noise violation is an easy way to pull you over to take a looksy in the car. Even if you beat it in court, which you will unless he had a db meter handy, you won't be able to sue for wrongful stop. Perhaps if you weren't loud, it would have been a ticket for failure to use your turn signal etc.. Best bet, get a db meter from RadioCrap, find the local ordinance limits and test your current set up. Then return the db meter if you're a cheap bastard like me.

I am running a pair of Magnaflows, I previously had the Flowmasters then Flowmaster 40 series.
The Magnaflows are a bit quieter and according to some flow numbers I located flow about another 100 CFM over the comparable size Flowmaster . My set up is all 2 1/2 inch mandrel bent aluminum tube with an x pipe, no cats. It's loud but not as loud as the Flowmasters.
Here's what I am using....http://store.summitracing.com/partde...part=MPE-14211.
But no part of my exhaust is stock.
Regards,
Ken

Tampa,
do this and you will be happy. I Also added D.Lomas' 100 cell high flow cats.
Dave demonstrated 0 hp loss with those units.

I am running the stock euro cat back after my x-over and I think that it sounds perfect, just loud enough. Try to find a euro cat back you wont be disappointed. I get alot of compliments on the sound of my car.

Well the cats are gone and car is sniffing OK so I think adding extra money is not the way to go. What does that mid muffler do besides restrict the flow? I would like to HEAR from some one that has the X-pipe no cats and rear muffler only and get the input I want before I start cutting.

I've tried that combo a few times (x-pipe, no cats, no rear muffler). I'm currently running without the muffler, but when I get tired of the loudness, I just throw the muffler back on I still have the resonators installed.
The sound is definately lower, but the idle rumble still sounds mean

I'm ready to try to get a little more sound out of it !
X-pipe no cats and muffler back on "due to the Ticket"!
Has anyone had this combo and removed the little mid muffler I was wondering what to expect, the power was less after putting the rear back on.
But its the sound too muted, I need to reach a midway point on the noise level.

Same noise problem, or lack of, on the GTS also. I just installed the Motorsports X-pipe, no cats with the stock intermediates and rear muffler and it is WAY to quiet. I think it's quieter now than it was with the full stock exhaust. Muffler is coming off in favor of the RMB soon. I'll let you know how that turns out. But I would be interested in an option to the rear muffler too, if anybody finds one.

I rooted around a bit for compact mufflers for my A6 4.2L install. Flowmaster hushpower resonators are fairly compact and may fit where cats were. The web audio files and some commentary indicate minimal sound reduction. Vibrant has a new line of compact straight-through resonators that may help (verocious motorsports is one vendor), but I went with aeroturbines on the audi. WIht a system that is otherwise stainless, I don't see the point of going with aluminized or painted components.
Oh, regarding the spot for the cats- I have a magnaflow dual in/out that fits in there, the pipe offset is a little different than the factory, but the dual in/out configuration provides a larger case for soud dampening.
I also tried the flowtech (I think) Vortex inserts when I had the 928SP Afterburner spintech exhaust- they didn't help much.

Mark I have flowmasters on my vette and they do a good job of taking that savage edge off. They also don't seem to rob power. If you go without cats I would get the mufflers as far up under the car as you can and then do the RMB. Probebly could then lose the resonators, although I don't think they provide much restriction. I had the same problem and just need to take the edge off. I installed the Dynomax "bullet" resonators where my cats never were (Euro). Dynomax claims 2-4Db loss per resonator. It sounds to me to be an accurate range. I'm much happier.
The resonator design is straight thru, so no loss of power.

Has anyone tried the Thrush Glasspack Mufflers in place of where the cats were and a rear muffler removal? I thought I would try these but not sure about size or fitment.
