Default 1981 AT hesitates when shifting into reverse

My 1981 Auto Trans hesitates for a couple of seconds when shifting into reverse. This only started when I changed the tranny pump seal. Fluid replaced and new filter kit installed. Fluid level checked. Any suggestions?

Steve Cattaneo is the person to talk to. According to the manual similiar conditions are related to the particular area you were just in. Try to pm Steve.

Not uncommon AFAIK. My 83 is slow to take up reverse, but fine in all other respects. My wrench says it may die in a month , or go for 5 years like this, no point in touching it yet. Just dont get into a position where you have to back up any significant slopes.

I have found my '81 is slow to reverse when first started. If I let it warm for a minute or so it is ok. Not sure what issue is, If you find out post.

My 82 does the same thing. It does not matter weather it is cold or not. Ther is a couple of second hesitation when I put it in gear till the time it engages.
Does anybody know where I can get a rebuild kit for the 3 speed? I have never sean one listed on PET. I have rebuilt some Chevy automatics so it can't be that hard.

I appreciate the help...it looks like I missed that in my manuals! Time to get dirty. $#&**!! I'll have to tackle this at a later date. It nice to know others have experienced the same fate. When I figure it out, I will post it. Cheers!

The adjustment procedure describe in this PDF is only for 3 speed transmissions. A delay into reverse in 4speed (A28) transmissions is caused by worn B3 clutches (internal) common problem

Good tip about the 4speeds, dont want 4 speed owners to think that chart applies. Could this contribute to his particular problem ?

Simple solution... 5-speed conversion.

You ready? 1 little 4 oz. bottle of Kendall Limited Slip Additive added directly to the tranny. Very stinky stuff, but works exceptionally within seconds. Will work for about 2 years and then 1 more bottle will be required. this stuff is so good it will give a car reverse back that hasn't had it at all in years in 2 seconds. Also great for cars that won't shift into overdrive etc. Note: This is not a selling tool, only for owners planning on keeping their cars for awhile without a major transmission expense. I will guarantee it will work, but it's only available at some Napa stores. You'll know if they sell it or not as soon as you walk in. The smell is overwhelming!

Try that and get back with me. Like I said.............guaranteed!

Todd
