Default Today I start the intake refresh any hints !

86
I am ready to dive into my intake refresh I know its about time to worry about those hoses ect. Anyone ready to chime in that has done this would be great, I know the 86 is a little unique.
I want to replace every part that needs attention and prepare for any future failure. If there is such a list of, have too replace items feel free to share. I have a parts list thanks to Roger but a little upfront, don't do this, need to do this and yes get this tool would be helpful.
My main focus is to not repeat the front balancer issue and put the washer on the wrong side and take it all apart again
Thanks
Mark

Be careful not to drop anything into the open intake ports , I Taped over the intake ports on the head to keep things out of them when is was cleaning things up in the valley. You don't have to buy the $200 86' intake gaskets either, the paper 1985 version will work just fine, but you probably knew that.
You will also want to inspect your injection wiring harness, mine had wires bare right behind the rubber boot on 3 of the injector electrical connections.

I did my '85 last year. Replace all the fuel lines and vacuum lines while you are there. My wiring was no in great shape, several connectors kind of fell apart in my hands so plan to replace what you can and consider options for those that you can not (I eliminated the in-line connector leading to my throttle position sensor). It is not really a bad job, just a lot of peices and parts. Mine took a while because I was powder coating parts etc. along the way and only able to work on it periodically. If you run into any problems I am sure you can get plenty of great insight and advice here.

One gig card ,I have pixx of every repair I have done plus the baggy with a sharpy works also ! I am looking at a list of parts comes up to about $450.00 seems a little over kill. I am wondering if I should replace the idle Stab Valve the idle is not rock soild, you kow the little surge sound, and somes times stalls when the air is on but not very often.

$450 sounds inexpensive actually. I believe I used a list from Dave Chamberland (Worf) for my S4 and including fuel lines, it was well north of $1k. Maybe the pre S4 is cheaper here?

I originally wasn't going to replace my idle stabilizer so it became one of those parts that you decide to get later and then hold up the whole project because you don't have it yet.

What are you including in your $450 package?

If not mentioned, I would plane the bottom of the oil filler. Significantly improves the seal to the engine. Don't forget the big o-ring at the bottom of the coolant crossover. Improved my cooling and eliminated leaks.

I have always been paranoid about this also and during the last year or so of always having an intake removed for SC development I came up with a simple solution. I have designed a set of intake port and oil filler neck cover plates. They include shorter bolts so you can bolt them solidly in place and never worry about dropping anything in the engine again. With a little bit of sealant on them you could even safely pressure wash the engine valley :-)

They are made of 1/8" thick 6061 T6 aluminum and should last a lifetime. Introductory price is $45 for the set (2 intake port covers, 1 oil filler neck cover and bolts)

DR,

That's an awesome solution. I like it a lot. When I go in there I'm definitely doing this. I imagine I'll make them myself since I've got the intake manifold gaskets already on the shelf, but offering them for sale is a great idea and I imagine that others will take you up on it.

Hi Mike,

Thanks. It was one of those "light bulb" over the head things that happened when I was finishing up the CAD file for our new Twin Screw Intake gaskets... I was test fitting it on the engine and I thought, heck I can just leave out the port holes and have some covers. I sent the file to the water jetter and he cut some for me. BTW, the ones pictured in the above post were prototypes, the new ones are shaped exactly like the outline of our new CAD designed gasket below. They work on all 32V engines.
