86.5 in GA for $500
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1986-...01610424QQrdZ1
This is a warning to all who may be interested in this car. It’s a complete POS. We rented a trailer and drove 200 miles based on the owner’s description over the phone and the pictures that he emailed to me. He also stated the car was in IMMACULATE condition before the fire. I did not feel bad offering him $500 since the previous owner GAVE him the car plus the new parts and they only wanted to get rid of the car rather than making a lot of money from it.
I called him to find out if the car had LSD. It did not. Then I thought, well, my 1988 could use a better interior. He stated it was in perfect condition. While he was sitting in the car he noticed there was 2 cracks on the POD, well, the owner sounds like a straight shooter. He said the seats had the usual stress cracks but they were not torn (which he explained, “that means you cannot touch the seat foam through the cracks”. Well, the POD had 2 cracks, the dash has the leather covering that is warped about 2 inches off the ac vent and the driver side seat has 3 small tears that are about ½ to 1 inch long which you can definitely touch the foam.
The quarter panels are warped but the leather is intact as he stated. The center console is leather covered and seems to be intact but the leather is dirty and needs to be redyed. The seats looks like they were cheaply PAINTED some time in the past as they did with the “Chrome” speaker trims.
The owner stated his friend who owned the car (and gave it to him for free) and it had a “small” engine fire behind the engine and they had the harness removed to work on it. The fire was so intense that it also melted half of the MAF and the bottom intake cover was only a 3 x 5 small piece of burnt plastic. The throttle body was covered in ashes and mostly everything else had fire damage. Btw, even the radiator looked horrible.
The car has a salvage title from NY (not disclosed on Ebay but the owner said this over the phone). I ran a carfax and the damage was back in 1993. From the look of the engine I would say its been sitting for at least 10 YEARS. While asking if he had the title in hand, he “remembered” he did not have a title but had a NY Salvage certificate. Btw, the car was parked at the house across where they live b/c the owner is on vacation and give them permission to park the car in his/her garage.
Exterior. Sucks, the MAYCO paint is dull (as the owner stated) and seems they painted over different rust spots (not disclosed). The front fenders have been BLENDED (very poor job as well) with the front bumper and it’s peeling REALLY bad around the driver side headlight. Driver side fender is off by at least 2 inches. Glasses are intact and shocks are completely worn.
The owner stated the car is being sold with new parts, cat converters and some rubber hoses. While I was there the wife said he would be keeping these parts to try to sell them on Ebay. I took another look at the engine (to see if this thing was ever worth $500) and I saw a washer lying at the bottom of the intake port. THAT WAS IT. I thanked the wife, which has nothing to do with the deal and drove away and never looked back. If the car was in such poor condition, I am willing to bet the car may have TBF or a bad tranny, who knows?
If you looking to purchase that car, there is not much to salvage. Everything looks bad. The center console could be restored, maybe the switches in the car, the doors, sunroof motor, part of the motor? I was not into that though, considering he lied about the condition of the car and was not looking to sell it with the new parts.
Btw, tires are severely cracked and the owner stated they were in good condition.
Buyers beware. Considering I specifically was buying it for the interior I can say he tricked me pretty good. I got hosed man, I got hosed.

Gio,
Interesting. I was going to head down and look at it myself. I just bought back my 86.5 that the new owner totaled. I have everything including a complete black leather interior and near perfect drivetrain that I was prepared to swap into that car.
I'd like to hear more about the state of the body. Was it straight?

You will need a front end minus the hood. The fenders has been fiberglassed with the front bumper. Also you will need to strip the paint to bear metal to have it repainted. At the end, you will have a car with a salvage certificate and to get a title you will need to get it inspected to have a new title reissued :-(.

G,
I understand where you are coming from BUT.. he wants 500 out of it.. with all due respect, what did you think you found a sucker selling a nice 86 for 5 bills... come on man... Thanks for the heads up though, I do know someone thinking about picking it up for parts

well, the guy wanted to get rid of it. I wanted it for the interior. The car was given to him. He agreed on my offer based on his description. His description was way off and completely misleading and then on top of it, he changed the deal and wanted to sell the car minus the new parts (and we already agreed on the phone for the car/parts). Would you be happy after you drove a trailer over 200 miles with your wife, 2 year old daughter and a 2 week newborn, hmmmm. I guess I am too pissed. Going to take a shower and call it a day.

I saw that car too and have been interested as well as the VIN indicates it's a 86.5 which should mean S4 suspension. All I need is a straight body. The S4 suspension and brakes would be a great addition to my '85 but if the damage was from '93 then I'd bet the car has been sitting for 14 years so the brakes are shot at this point. If they're planning to part out some of the stuff pictured then they need to modify their listing or someone should report it to e-bay as being fraudulent. I was contemplating a bid on it but it seems that it may be more trouble then it's worth since I can't be assured the body is straight.

Suspension was very soft, much softer than my 1988 that I was looking replacing it with. The brake disks needed to be turned (considerably) and it may be beyond to the recommendation thickness). I guess the calipers are fine. I have reported them to ebay and retracted my original bid.
Yeah, I had the money, the trailer and the car to pull it with. I wonder why I did not load it up.

The seller just called me and offered all of it including new parts for $500. Given the description I am torn between buying and parting it out or rebuilding it and getting a pretty cheap driver out of the deal.

He is desperate to sell. I have paid more than that and gotten less. Decisions... descisions.

For the $500 with the new parts, and let say you need it for the switches, windows or body parts (don't count on the front bumper and front fenders) I guess its a good deal. The guy was extremely nice over the phone and it was nice meeting the wife. Iif you deal the price, be sure to go over what is included in the deal. I just hate being lied at.
