This weekend is POC event using the infield road race track the old very brown 1980 will be there. Next weekend is a joint PCA/POC event with cup races Joe Fan will be running his stroker Mark Anderson will be in a cup car for the weekend. They use part of the oval so speeds get up around 170 MPH !! before a 90 degree left hand turn into the infield track ! Cal Speedway Fontana is a PORSCHE place with right hand turns .

Track Tours at the Speed Festival – March 30 – April 1.For $25.00 you can drive your car (Porsche or other), with passengers, on the actual track during the lunch break on any of these three days. You must be 18 years old, have a valid driver’s license AND your car must be in good, road worthy condition. Groups of about 20 cars at a time will proceed single file around the track at PARADE LAP SPEED. This is a very unique opportunity. Ordinarily the average person can’t get within three fences of a world class track like this. You will be amazed, even at the reduced speed, the impression you get of what a real race track is like. In addition, I am looking for volunteers to help us any or all of those three days (about a two hour stint). Let me know if you are interested or need more info. SkipCarter@pobox.com or 619.992.9927.

it'd be cool to see a school of sharks cruising around If everyone agreed on a day, it'd probably be pretty easy to do...

iirc, there's paddock parking too... if folks want to park together contact skip and he could probably help make that happen

The old very brown 1980 and I had a great weekend... another TWO HOURS of driving as fast as humanly possible . I had a "student" on Saturday with a NEW GT3 so rode with him for three sessons WHAT a CAR ! Even though this was JUST the infield track one 911 race car got totalled into a barrier and a 968 had some damage from hitting a tire wall. But with those exceptions it was a GREAT event . The were two other 928s also running so 3 out of 100 cars.

The POC is a pure driving club ...no wine tours, no concours, the ONLY banquet is the annual awards for the "winners" to get recognized. They have the short track series where ANYONE with a drivers license can drive a STOCK car the ONLY safety equipment is a HELMET and they have loaners ! The club has a requirement that you do 4 events under the supervision of instructors before you are eligable for a short track license and allowed to drive alone on the short tracks. Once that is completed you can then go to the big tracks ,Willow ,Vegas, Cal Speedway, Laguna Seca, Infineon where once again you have an instructor, once signed off you can time trial on the big tracks....after a few events you can attend a Racers Clinic Day where you practice racing skills again with much supervision and coaching those "who get it" get a racing license and you may then go full on wheel to wheel racing. The events are well organized , run in a timely manner, strong emphasis on driver education and training but with a well defined path to higher and higher driving challenges. There are many very highly skilled drivers and very fast race cars yet there is a place for the old very brown 1980 as well ! I did my first event with them nearly 20 years ago...

Would you suggest, then, Jim, for someone to start with the most stripped down car that they can instead of trying to progress in POC with a street car?

The real key is TRACK TIME forget about what class you are in just GO DRIVE ...no matter how good or bad you are there will be faster and slower drivers and the sessions are based on LAP TIMES itis the driver NOT THE CAR so you always have someone to chase and some one to chase you ! With the transponder you get to see every lap you do and if you are doing better or worse. So run what you have and after a couple years of experience you can decide to build what you need based on all that you have learned.

True True. I have just decided recently, though, that I work too hard on these cars to have a street one with all my powder coating, plating, polishing and STUFF to drive it around a track. So I have the 78 slated. Maybe I should ut that one together quickly and go out there this summer. Maybe I should have a "Slap it together and race" SoCal 928 party.

EDIT: Because it seemed quite apparent to me that chunking a car is quite easy when you get the edge of the envelope.

Ah ,we would have a very hard time finding an open track plus the infield at Cal Speedway is $18,000 for two days plus insurance and corner workers !
