Just subscribing to the thread. I'm still in for the LA group buy. Any thoughts on timing for trying to get something together? (I'm actually home for the next month or so.)

I've been looking for a good source for inexpensive 928 glass that could be delivered to the Northwest and have been unsuccessful. If anyone runs across a possible source, I'd really like to know. The large warehouses I've talked with wish to sell to local dealers. Thank you.

I left a message for our windshield installer to get me a price quote. He has done over FIFTEEN windshield for my wife's family and last 2 months ago he installed a brand new WS on the 330i for $165!!! The WS has the build-in antenna and the rain sensors.
Anyone would be interested in a possible WS group install around Birmingham, AL? That is if the price is write. I won't be adding any premium to the price

I paid $1700 for an installed windshield from the local P-shop (my ins deductable is $500 - so that was a big hit). Anyway, I went to the dealer in order to get the best factoiry glass and a good install job. I got Sigla glass, and it's wavy right in the middle at eye level - just crap. The install job was subcontracted out right on the dealer's lot, and that was crap too. The next day, a stone hit it and it starred (now repaired, but badly).
Long and short, get the cheapest glass and install job you can find. Nothing magical about Sigla AFAIC!

"Just make sure they are familiar with the 928 as its easy to mess up the trim and/or the inner A pillar cover. "
That is the truth. I would remove the A pillar cover prior to taking the car into the glass shop. Mine were ruined when the glass shop cut through the leather when trying to cut the original windshield out. They said they would cover the repairs but I simply tossed the old covers and had some spare A pillar covers at hand and didn't waste time returning. If they had been competent in the first place I would not have had the problem. No reason to make it worse so I stayed away.

Now THAT's a bad day!

I could manage glass from AL...
presently looking in DFW for 86.5 bronze (or just not green tint) with imbedded antenna.

What's an 'A pillar?'
Thanks all!

I'm not sure why the A-pillar cover gets mooched. I've watched the installer do my windshield, and the A-pillar and all the interior liners are left alone. The installer would have to be pretty sloppy.

The A pillar is the first vertical support for the roof and is at the side of the windshield just ahead of the leading edge of the door. It is easy to remove and should be removed to install the glass. The installers use a sharp wire or blade to slide between the glass and the support base for the windshield. Since they obviously operate on a "time is money" basis (meaning working themselves into a frenzy as they remove/replace the glass) they tend to be sloppy and that wire sometimes manages to cut into the leather of the A pillar as they slide it up the pillar toward the top of the windshield. Risky Biz: As you are sitting in the driver's seat, look to your left slightly and the vertical upright support for the roof is the A pillar; the support at the rear of the side window/rear of the door is the B pillar, etc. The upholstered covers will come out after loosening the ceiling upholstery cover/panel screws which are found at the edge of that panel along the door opening. Then pull it away from the roof slightly and lift up and back on the A pillar covering piece to remove it. After the windshield is installed, replace it exactly in reverse. Sometimes the corners of that piece curl upward toward the edge of the windshield. I took a heat gun and heated them and re-formed them to sit flush with the top of the dash. When you replace the windshield, it seems a good time to perform that fix on them as well since they are temporarily out.
