I have seen previous posts, but always want to know what's new.

What is one of the simpler ways to upgrade the stereo system on a 88 928? The current one, stock unit, doesn't have a CD player and there is really no bass, but it really doesn't sound too bad right now. The speakers don't sound distorted. It just needs either a CD or Sirius Radio capability, some additional bass and some power.

I want to stay with a black head unit that isn't too out of line with the original one (i want it to look as stock as I can) and maybe a replace the existing rear speakers or add a sub woofer to get some bass.

I want to keep the expense to $1000 or less.

Suggestions?

My vote for a head unit is a CDR-220, which I'm happy with, though I'm not happy with the bass. I had to have my 6.5" speakers refoamed, which was an obvious improvement, but I think the stock amp isn't cutting it. The next thing I want to try is to replace the amp under the passenger side seat cover, but I haven't critically examined how you go from the stock multipin DIN connector into an aftermarket amp without cutting off the connector, and which aftermarket amps A) are ok with 2 ohm loads and B) fit under the seat cover. So- I'll be interested in the replies you get (from people unlike myself who have a clue about such things!)

I would not cut off the connector, you could make up a new connector that plugs into the stock one and then goes to your new Amp.
The pin outs are available in the manual under wiring diagrams - radio, I'll bet someone has them handy.

I replaced mine with a Blaupunkt Laguna CD35 from SW Stereo in New Jersey; he sells a nice little wiring harness adapter so you use the original amp. It sounds fine and the price is right. I paid $169.00 last June and that price included delivery.

My car also had the OEM Radio, (junk) I replaced it with a Blaupunkt Bahamas, It matches the car interior very well. Junk the stock amp the new radio will have more power anyways. I bought my radio from Crutchfield and then had a local shop install it. They charged me $45.00 to install it for that amount it was well worth it to me. They had all the stuff and was an easy job. You will need to have extensions for the speaker wire coming out of the back of the radio and will need to run them to where the amp is. Make sure who ever installs it to hook up the wire from the alarm to the radio. The wire just needs to ground out on the radio if not you alarm will think your radio was stolen and when locked it will tell you this and your neighbors will tell you also. Just have the installer pay attention to what the wire is. I also found with the stock speakers and a 45 watt radio it got plenty loud even with the X pipe no cats and RMB. But the system does lack the punch of good base so for me a powered sub is on the list for later this summer.

Tough choice...it sounds like if I go with a new head unit, the stock amp isn't needed, but some new speakers or a amp are needed if I want more bass...correct?

I think there is a radio supplier that will sell a CDR-220 with an adapter or jack that works with the existing setup. But I think I would need to do something about the speakers if I went that route.

Not sure what to do??? I guess I could go with a unit that I like the look of and build with that.

Funny I was thinking about this same subject over the past few days (cabin fever). I was thinking the Nakamichi CD 400, CD 500 or maybe go extreme and get the Clarion DRZ9255.

The CD400 has all the ingredients for great sound quality including the 24 Bit and 4V Pre out, it also has an aux input for the Ipod although it's drawback is no MP3 controls which I really want....$320.00

The CD 500 has all the same features as the CD400 but a few more options including the MP3 playback and 9 color choices for illumination but still no MP3 controls..........$400.00

The Clarion DRZ9255 has the 4V preouts, a copper case, DSP!, 4 Built In Crossovers, MP3 Controls and two Aux Inputs and I think it will look perfect in the sharks dash.........now the downside $740.00

Clarion...$740 ouch....it does look great though.

I appreciate the suggestions. I think that the nakamichi CD500 looks more appropriate for the car with the left hand ****, black face and not too flashy. I'm not too into the MP3 or Ipod stuff, CD or Sirius radio compatibility is more my flavor.

Yeah my wife agrees, the Nak definitely is a better fit for the sharks interior.

If you're not into the MP3 the CD400 may be the better and cost effective option at $320.00.

I bought a Kenwood receiver to replace a tired unit. What I liked most about the (several) model(s) is that it has a USB plug coming off the back--and I've got an 8gb travel drive hooked up to it. Works great, and holds tons of music. It also accepts an iPod, plugged into the CD changer port, although you can't control the iPod from the changer. Doesn't matter, since I got the micro drive, I don't use my iPod in the car anymore.

There are several models for less than $200 at Crutchfield, with internal amps of ~22 watts per channel.
