The Nak decks have a great sound. I have a very nice Pioneer XM radio in the 964 C2 I just purchased. The PO just paid $700 for it including the $200 antenna. It has an interesting LCD screen that plays pictures while driving. A bit annoying but it sounds quite good also using stock speakers and I believe it has an Ipod input + 50 W by 4 amp.
If you would like I can post pics of it that otherwise it will be a few weeks before the GTS comes out of storage.

Anthony, when you get the car out of storage I would very much appreciate if you could post a few pics of the deck.
I have two Eclipse 2 Channel Amps which I will use in the car along with an Audio Control EQX. I also have Eclipse crossovers although I'm not sure if they will be compatible with the MB Quart speakers in the car. My car has some kind of weird DSP which only works properly when playing a CD, not sure what one of the PO's was thinking when they did this.

10" sub fits over spare
Hi Tim,
If you get a 10" sub under about 5" deep, then it will fit over the spare. Subwoofer can be surface mounted on a marine ply plate traced from the stock spare tire cover. Basically a marine plywood recreation of the stock spare cover with a 10" hole in it.

A few suggestions from someone who likes a sound system that allows one to do 20 MPH without the engine on...
1. It is important that you get a unit that gives you a direct MP3 player input. Just take a look at diving CD sales and you'll understand that music will have moved to new medium in the next 5-6 years.
2. Getting a CD player that allows for the playback of MP3 CDs is great. You can burn a boatload of tunes on to a single CD, categorized into folders but genre or whatever. This is infinitely more efficient than a CD changer.
3. I have an Alpine unit that includes a BBE feature. This vastly improves the sound vividness, especially at the low end.
4. I installed a Bazooka subwoofer, which fits quite nicely in the back. It is obviously not as neatly concealed as those installed beneath the hatch flooring, but it delivers great sound and I still get more than half of the back hatch from groceries. The corresponding amp is mounted on the back of the right back seat.
This stuff is fun to shop for. Best of luck with your search.
Peace,
Tim

Just for grins, you might take your car to a local higher-end car stereo shop and ask them what they would do. The ask costs nothing, and you might be happier just handing the car to them for a day or two and let them do whatever magic they have available. You still get to choose components, they get the fun of making it all work.
Just don't let them splice any cables into or tap the wires around the fuse panel. They need a dedicated feed anyway, no need to risk damage to the wiring in the car. Most of the 928 electrical nachtmares seem to be rooted in stereo and cell-phone installs, in my estimation.

Well the car is finally out of storage and I am so much happier. Only gone since January but it felt like an eternity. Makes you appreciate it that much more after it is gone for a while.
So I took this picture this morning hope it gives you an idea.

Wow that really does look like it came from the factory that way! Actually better considering it probably sounds 10000 times better than the stock deck.

I have replaced the head unit and installed infinity speakers where ever I could and the radio still sounds terrible. I have decided to put a 10" sub in the spare. I hope it will work.

Piccardo,
If it really sounds terrible a Sub isn't likely to fix it.
If the sound is just lacking some low end punch a sub will help fix that...
Seem you may have other issues: speaker matching F/R ...phase? impendance matching, wrong passive crossovers or mismatched /poorly tuned active crossovers... if th sound is terrible - you'll need to fix that before you add yet one more compounding complexity with a sub....

I have the original speakers in my '87 and I added a powered infinity sub that is attached to the back of the driver's passeger seat - not what I wanted to do exactly but I was taking a long road trip and had to do it quickly. Anyway, the system (Alpine head) sounds great in my driveway but on the road it seems it's lacking something. Then it dawned on me that my problem isn't really the stereo but sound proofing. I plan on trying to add soundproofing to the doors and rear wheel wells in the near future. I think it'll make a huge difference since the system sounds great at a stand still. I was looking to upgrade all my speakers but I think I'm just going to upgrade the rear seat speakers because I need a little more bass in the midrange.

Yea thats what i am trying now. Sound proofing and some new tires cuz the old ones were extremely old and loud. They actually caused vibrations before when cold. In any case I needed some Low's. The problem may be that I wired the new speakers into the harness that originally fed the original amp under the passenger side seat. I may need to run new wires to all the speakers. PAIN in ***!!!

I've also been looking for quiet tires for my next replacement. My current Pirellis are noisey. I didn't really notice the inetrior noise too much but I recently bought a 2002 Ranger truck and drive that during the week and it's just so much more quiet in the cab - that's just not right.

I added Dynamat behind the speakers which brought out the low end considerably.
