answers to old issues
digging alittle deeper into my new 87 S4;
1. both bellows on the rack and pinion are full of power steering fluid. I previously replaced the power steering hose, and that solved most of the leak. the under protector is full of fluid and when they moved the bellows off the center piece of the power steering rack; it gushed out power steering fluid.
they said that's bad and the valve should keep it closed and there shouldn't be any fluid on the center rack part of the rack. Just want to make sure that's correct on this car. is it?
looks like I can have it rebuilt locally for about 175.
2. the black light on the coolant leak issue showed it's coming from the water pump and the two o rings which goes to the housing of the block(?). looks like a new water pump in in my immediate future.
3, ride/new shocks. car has settled, ride is much better, still alittle harsh over very bad road (kirby in houston) but not nearly as bad as it was, and it's acceptable

That's cheap for a rack rebuild. Sounds like it does need work BTW, lots of fluid in the boots is a bad sign. You could clean it up and see how long it takes them to refill, but it's probably due anyway. See if the rebuilder will do anything to ensure that the center shaft is tight in the rack -- sloppy internal bushings(washers actiually) can cause odd handling, like tramlining.
