I'll end up, barring something seriously going bad, about $6000 by the time I'm done with my 1979 and that includes the free car. It won't be a show-winner but will be worth every penny in the experience of working on it and pride of ownership. Will it be worth $6k? Unlikely, but safe to say it will be worth "in that range."
Most cars made after around 1974 aren't going to be classics (opposed to lots and lots of cars made prior to 74 and esp. in the 60's are classics). I think increasing complexity and ugly bumpers have a lot to do with it. The 928 doesn't have the bumper issue, but even the early cars are more complex than say, a 356.
