Is it just me or are 928 prices dropping? Here are some examples,

I think most of those were for sale during the winter months, though I didn't check all of them. Either way, 928's will bring as much as $5000 less in the winter vs. that same car in the spring/summer. In other words, buy one during the winter and sell one during the summer!

 

I don't think they CAN drop any lower. Actually I have felt they were increasing ever so slightly.

 

I think the good cars have bottomed out and will hold there own. Each car needs to be looked at by itself.

The cars you mention are 13 to 21 years old and incorporate many complex mechanical systems. Price is determined more by deferred maintenence than by year and model. A 928 that needs paint and interior plus the usual deferred mechanical maintenance such as steering rack, torque tube, motor mounts, a/c system, CV joints and boots, TB/WP etc can easily cost $30,000 to bring back to top shape.
Each of the cars you list for sale have counter parts on the market this week at double those asking prices and seem to be selling.
A 1957 Chevy can be found for $2,500 and also for $250,000.
The values on older cars do not lend themselves to Kelly blue book rules.

 

The guys on the corvette forum complain about the same thing...Corvette's are too cheap especially in winter then raise in price again during summer...

I think it's just a car thang...imho

 

Each of the ones you list here had some issues that affect price, be it high miles, or needed repairs. I did think that they all were good deals, but would not consider them representative of a 928s market value in good condition.

 

For pristine 928's that are properly maintained the prices are not down.....I doubt any of us would sell our nice sorted out 928's for so cheap....in the not so distant future all the worn out beaters will be donated to 928intl...& only nice ones will be left & the prices will start to reflect it!!

 

Agreed...I would just like to see the prices stabilize. And for the one's that need some work to get the needed TLC before they do end up in the bone yards.

I liked the one on Craigslist myself. Let's see:
Steering: needs new rack, tie rods, and hoses.
Minor coolant leak: needs head gasket replaced
Idle sometimes unsteady: LH computer is shot
some electrical issues: the sky is the limit on this
some cosmetic issues: I let it sit out in the sun for 2 years when it broke down and a family of large rodents moved in and ate most of the soft materials. I also cut back the resolution of the pics so you can't see just how bad it really is. But take my word, it's a great car.

Miles/condition are king. You fail to site the 5 or 6 pristine GTS examples that have sold for 3 x those cars.... I sold my 54k mile GTS for $48,500 and like Todd says, if I would have held it until spring it would have been in the low $50k's.

 

Lets face it, the 928 is an anamoly (had to look it up to make sure). One of the best cars ever made but hardly anyone outside of porsche boards knows what they are.

Most have FALLEN into the wrong hands. These owners either don't have the money to keep the car maintained properly or the brains and determination to learn how to fix it themselves. So a problem appears and after it sits, they sell it for anything they can get for it. A little cash beats a headache for them.

Prices have dropped lately, the low miler ones lately like the doc car in WV or the low mile SC car. It's a nice thought to think that all the neglected examples will be parted out, so that only the rare well cared for ones will see the lighht of day, but then the big 2+2 would not survive.

There isn't a new car under 85K that compares to mine as a whole package and I bought mine because its what I always wanted. So the price matters little. BUT its the pride thing that gets me. It should be cared for for what it is, the best porsche production car ever made not some beater for slackers.

 

It been said before, and I can't agree more: if you've bought a 928 as an investment, you've bought the wrong car. -Ed

 

Todd brings up a good point about the season. Sports cars and boats sell low in the fall and winter and high in the spring. In the fall and winter, a good portion of the country goes into winter storage/hibernation mode. Sports cars and boats are not something that get a whole lot of use during the cold months so there is a smaller pool of buyers. In the spring, people are anticipating the warmer months and fun in the sun. They are also getting back their tax returns in alot of cases.

Overall I think the prices have remained steady.
