There is only one solution - keep everything bare metal and attach a tag that says in bold red letters "ALWAYS DISCONNECT THE BATTERY FIRST!"

The DIY (home made) one is sturdy enough to lift out the whole CE panel if asked to .... possibly even tow the car : relay pulling is a breeze - and far more fun once the ground strap is lifted.

Wine cork puller for relays would be nice.
Not much room to work around relays so something that braces itself to the CE board and then levers out the relay would make easy work of relay work.

I use a Medium size set of Vise grips and adjust them just snug enough to lock on to the relay and then wiggle away until the relay lets loose. I've never broken a cover....even the plastic ones.

On installation I like to put just a little dielectric grease on the relay terminals for next time.

Lisle 46950 Relay Pliers.
Offset handles and thin tips allow access to relays in confined areas. Specially designed tips are angled to fit slots or edge of relay cover. this allows relay to pop free from socket with less chance of damaging relay cover.

Just ordered these after messing around too long with a paint can opener.

I use these pliers the most - as low down as possible on the can - right at the base.

They are nice... I added friction tape inside the jaws. They work great except for the long cans and the double cans.
For those I remove the ones around them with this so I can use a tool like Dave showed.

I think I should make Garth's model too though - I like that!

The downsides to these is they are very hard to find and aren't cheap

Works perfectly, even better if you use them in pairs.

Here is what I use. Travels in my GTS all the time in the passenger side door pocket.

I have tried a few and find that the relay pliers will yank the relay cover before it will pull the relay - my late mechanic had a version that had a pair of tabs that could get under the relay - I wish I knew where he acquired it - I always assumed Snap-On.

The pliers only work well if you can get right down over the base - if you can't get that low down its best not to use them...

If you can do that - they work very well and are very quick

Finally got around to using the Lisle 46950 Relay Pliers.

They were just big enough to remove my window relay quickly and without using foul language.
