Couple things you folks need to realize.
1. the 99 cobra has 320bhp. With his mods, maybe 285rwhp
2. the 99-04 cobras have independent rear suspensions. They are not as well designed as a porsches, but they do offer some handling and ride upgrades in stock form to a solid axle.
3. Top speed in a stock geared 99 cobra comes in 4th gear. They will do right around 150mph in stock form. With a set of shorter gears (which are very popular), 165 is not out of the question.
4. Although not as stable as a porsche, its not gonna fly off the road at 120 mph. A little floaty, sure.
5. Cobras come with vented 13 inch brembo front rotors, with two piston PBR calipers. They also have steel braided brake lines. In back is a single piston 11.75 inch unit. The braking is quite impressive for a heavy car.

As for the 928 in question, I have no idea about its capabilities, so there is nothing I can say.

the reasons I know the aforementioned can be displayed below:

I kind of agree with Hacker. Ill admit, a well schooled auto driver can keep up with a "sport-bike day" rider who is inexperienced with aggressive riding. This can be true. But all except the slowest of an amateur racing class bike racer will easily leave our cars (and most) in the dust.

Road America is different also, that is a well known HUGE racetrack (that seriously kicks butt), designed for top-end, not sprint racing. My GSXR red-lined at 14.8K RPM. I dont see any car getting me anywhere NEAR off the line, but I excelled in that because the first one to turn one has the better edge and clear track!! RA cars could keep up for sure, not pass, but keep up, although the new shicane doesnt help their effort!!! HA!

Just about any other track, a CCS or WERA racer would easily out-brake, out-accelerate any 4-wheeler! I raced with BMWCCA before my 13 years of motorcycle racing, and now I would like... not likely to do... but like to DE track my 928. In those years, I have yet to see all but a few (hand-full) of cars that can run our track times. Not trying to start a fight, just Ive been well integrated into both and I feel I speak with a modest amount of experience. Unless the contest is COMPLETELY unfair, even a 600 will ROMP any car.

Not sure about a '99, but early 2000s Cobras have Brembo 13" rotors & 4 piston caliper brakes on the fronts. I doubt those would be fading before a stock early 80s 928, would they? Less he had problems with the pads or such. I know about the Cobra brakes 'cause I upgraded to them on my son's Roush, over their PBR brakes, that Roush had upgraded over a stock GT's brakes. Those Brembo's have some serious stopping ability. Can't see him having problems with brake fade with a few laps. Not unless in cornering he had to stay on his brakes lots more than you would in a shark. Then perhaps?? I know with our Roush, with the upgraded & beefed up suspension, Roush advertises being able to pull almost 1G laterally. Who knows for sure.

I think straight line that Cobra would be tough up to 60-80, especially with the rear end gearing. Above that, then you'd be able to better challenge. On a track in the twisties, I think you'd have better chances too. Then the driver's abilities would come into play more. As said, the 928 wasn't designed to be a dead start dragster, least from the factory! I can tell ya that my son & I have had similar bantering. He's certain I wouldn't stand a chance in any venue. Course, I'd expect him to be as cocky! I see in his eyes a wee bit of doubt on occasion though & he'll conceed that the shark would give him some challenge!

Well I'm coming from the actual experience I've had so I can't speak to rider skill other than I'm just an average bike rider. I know I've been on the bike and had a hard time passing a sports car because of his braking and traction advantage and in my 928 I've had bikes buzz up behind me in the straights but I leave them through the twisty stuff.
I guess my annecdotal evidence won't help in the test enviroment where the rider actually has mad skills though.
I'd still race any of them from Washington state to New York City and back and expect to win

This is not apples and apples but apples and oranges plain and simple. Were talking 16 years difference between the cars. So that is 16 + of design difference. You need to compare cars of the same years to make it even. I bought a 84 Stang GT new and it was 175 HP with a Holly 4 Barrel carb 5 speed fun car. Now with all things even I would say the 83 Stang would get crushed.

It will still be apples to oranges because a 928 cost about 5 times what a 84 gt cost.

Cobra standing start
Cobra rolling start
...just the way it is. A Cobra is <typically> a strong running 300hp car.

Now, take a nice drive through the mountains, or better yet the track as suggested, and he will wonder why you are having so much fun after a little time/few laps...while he's trying to figure out how to deal with his sack-of-potatoes handling.

Okay, they don't actually handle that bad, but he WILL be more stressed out, because the Cobra DOES take more focused attention and effort to keep a swift pace for any length of time. Also, he'll be hanging on during decel twitchiness, while you'll be adjusting the stereo. btdt.

Oh, and PLEASE DON'T find out who wins on the top end - it's usually just a game of chicken, as few people have the road or intestinal fortitude to run wide-open. If you're friends, go for a ride in each, get up to a decent speed and evaluate how each car feels; bet he will re-think the capability of your 928 (w/out considering it's age).

I think the rolling start is the way to go. As to the top end comment can't say I've been there on my 928...need a very controlled enviornment and to replace the last 25% of my 928 I haven't already done.... just have to get thru emissions and fix a header leak.

Its always funny to see where these threads go.... time to go read the paint your 928 thread, my paint looks like crap
