I got challenged by a few 911s..

One more thing, while I'm on my soapbox.
This was about a week before we went on a fun run. My ol' '84 was running down the N. Texas backroads with a couple of regularly tracked and slightly modded 996's at 130mph. They weren't dusting me off there butts on the straights either. Ruby isn't turbo'd, but she IS magic. And she looks sweet too, a woman with looks and muscle....

does anyone have more experience in 911s vs 928s than me? trust me, a 911 with 200 to 210rwhp at 2700lbs is everybit as fast as an S4. on the track, the 911 can have an edge at some tracks. HOWEVER, and thats a big HOWEVER, gut the S4, bolt on the better suspension, lower it, and it will SMOKE the 84 911. remember, 3500lbs vs 2700lbs effects braking AND handling. but when you get a 928 down to 2700lbs and the 911s get to 2400lbs the 928 has an advantage, as usually can get the hp near 300rw with out too much effort.

It's also had a bit of a diet so the weight with a full tank and a boat anchor of a rollbar and two sets of 5 point harnesses is 2650lbs. So let's call it 11.04 lbs/hp. Let's take the S4 now at 316HP at crank according to Porsche. Weight, call it 3500lbs-which is probably conservative. So, this gets us to 11.075 lbs/hp.
Do the math and tell me why you find it hard to believe I can run neck and neck with a 928S4?
PS- Wasn't my S4, but it was one that receives a lot of care and attention...

I sold my 68 911 several months ago the one with the 2.8 mechanical injection c-6 cams headers etc with full stock interior it weighed 2020 lbs it put down 190 hp and good torque at higher RPM that was a rather quick car just not off the line. I run on track with all kinds of Porsche cars and some other exhibition cars. Typical weekend is 100-120 cars ALL have transponders and EVER lap is recorded and ALL are displayed on the wall of the main garage after each session for all to see. So over the last 5 years that is something over 50,000 plus opportunities for comparison of how the old brown 1980 lap times compare to just about any Porsche car you wish. That is on a track with everyone pedaling just as fast as they think is humanly possible no speed limit, no cops, no opposing traffic ... checking my time one day fellow driver asked "what are your lap times" I told him and he said "that is about what I am doing" he said he was driving a 993 then said "which one of us is stupid" . Because somehow the old very brown and I both tend to be hard to overlook for a number of reasons Look at that old guy in that piece of crap faded brown 928 with little bitty miss- matched wheels

Time to throw some more fuel on the fire.
Stock 79 (headers, S4 brakes / suspension) vs. a few *** draggers. This was my frist event in this car, second event ever.
Tires: Conti Sport 2 street tires
Pads: Metal Master Blue street pads

This event has four groups. A = fastest, D=slowest. This video is from group C. IIRC only instructors are allowed in group A&B. So this is the fast group for the students.

Can a 928 beat a 911? Sure. But, a lot of the recent discussion on this thread is whether a 911 can give a 928 a run for its money.

Don't forget your Turbo sticker.......that has to add 20whp at least!! :>)
Granted I am a track driving rookie...but at the last event I went to (my first)....there were several mid 80's 911 on the track with rookie drivers like me....it was VERY easy to pass them....but it was easy to pass the CaymanS, BoxsterS too....the 997 CarreraS was fun to pace with......but passed him too.....the car I kept up with in the corners, but couldn't pass on the straights was a 04-05 911 Turbo S Convertible...about the same weight as the 928, maybe slightly heavier...but with 444hp....& 315 rear tires and 15" carbon brakes....I was surprised to be able to outbrake him.....in turn 2 at Thunderhill I would catch him mid corner....& be stuck on him until turn 9....I could take 6-7-8 (mostly 7-8) at full throttle....where he would accelerate then slow for the corners....but between 9-10 he would pull....same for 13-14 & the main straight....it was alot of fun pacing with him....now if I had a S/C.....:>)

On Saturday & Sunday it opens up as a "regular" DE, each field grows quite a bit. This video was from Saturday. I started in group 4 on Friday, once I was waved off for solo driving (little S at the top, hard to see) I was bumped up.

With better drivers in the cars I passed, would I have caught them? I doubt it.
Jean-Louis drives a 928 very similar to mine (300lbs less weight with 60 more hp) he runs at least 20 seconds faster than I do. He's also on track tires with better pads.

There is no substitute for track time and with enough time most can become a good driver maybe never a great driver but good.. and note that nearly all the students especially who own a Porsche THINK they are great drivers that lasts about 15 minutes or however long the first run session happens to last. Maybe driving is like sex most think they are great at it but compared to what ?
