It's an aluminum washer, so just enough to crush it for a good seal. I did not torque mine to any specific setting, just snugged it like I would the drain plug. No leaks.

IIRC aluminum threads, too tight and there go the threads.

I'd say start at 22lb/ft(spec for other crush washers, e.g. banjo fittings on rack) and see if it leaks...

Its called a "Thermostat Housing Plug" in my WSM - page 10-08.

Torque setting is 59 ft.lb.

I just installed mine last night - works ok.

I saw that too. But didn't think the description really fit...i.e. thermostat housing for the oil pressure sender??

59 ft/lb seems high...scary high...

But I presume by it 'works out' you didn't strip anything!!

From the description and its location on the block I am assuming that it controls the flow of oil through the rad mounted oil cooler, just as the water thermostat controls flow to the rad.

The thread is 46 mm dia so 59 ft.lbs did not seem like a lot. I did remember it needing a big bar to break it free when I was dismantling the block.
