Default Twin Disk Clutch Virgin Question

Ok OK I have finally moved over to the dark side and am in the middle of a twin disk clutch install.

I have searched the archives and understand the theory of positioning the center plate equidistance between the clutch plates.
Worked out how to adjust the center plate.

My problem is that I can only see the rear clutch plate and not the front.
So how can you position the center plat in the middle without seeing the front clutch.

I also read the adjusting the center plate all the way backwards works as well.

Any thoughts or pointers?

Thanks,
Roger

Put it all the way back and it should position itself correctly on its own. If adjustment is too loose it will not hold this position where wear of the plates allows it to move forward but normal operation of the clutch will not allow adjustment to move.

Erkka is correct. Simply adjust the intermediate plate as far rearward (towards the trans) as the adjusters will allow. Once you bolt the pressure plate on it will adjust itself and continue to adjust itself 'automagically'. Good Luck!

Thank you for the comments as above.

I am now convinced that "push the center plate to the back" is the way to go providing the center plate is in good condition.

Sterling, thanks for your guidance as well.

This is not the updated centering method. There is another way that works much better. Search Deveks old website if you can, they described it there.

Good luck.

The Devek method did not work for me.
There was no way you could center the plate between the two clutch discs with any accuracy.
Besides its a self adjusting clutch so unless I am missing something, once you have centered it it can move again once the clutch is engaged.
After a lot of experimenting it was far easier and a lot more accurate to move the plate as far aft as possible. Engage the clutch and it was positioned perfectly.
So the whole point to me seems that you place the center plat in a position so that when the clutch is engaged it moves it to the optimum position - yes or no?
Still a virgin at this so shoot me down if I have it wrong.
Thanks,
Roger

Yes. Releasing clutch will move intermediate ring where ever it needs to go. After this adjustment should be such that three flat springs holding intermediate ring will force ring away from clutch disk I (front disk) as far as three adjustments allow it to move. This movement should be about half the distance of the pressure plate. This leaves equal space for both disks.

If three adjustments are set to somewhere else than as rear as they can be when clutch is disengaged this will leave unequal space for two disks next time its released. Also if this would be correct place to set adjustments it would mean system would need constant adjustment to counter disk wear. Only logical choise is to put them as far back as possible and allow system to align itself. If it doesn't do this on its own and hold adjustment pieces at limit were they move closer and closet to one edge while disks wear something is wrong and some parts need to be changed or modified. Besides commonly known center shaft one bore wear mainly looseness of spring washers which keep adjustment pieces in position can affect system and allow intermediate plate to move out of adjustment.

Erkka,
Thank you for that confirmation - maybe I am not a Virgin any more.
