Bill,

Back in 2001 I got "Let go" the Tuesday before Thanksgiving because my employer couldn't get 2nd round venture funding. I was 53 years old, but fortunately I knew it was coming and had made the neccesary financial arrangements ahead of time. I was unemployed for 21 months.... and it was the best time of my life! I lost 45 lbs, studied yoga, did some consulting, repainted every room in my house, remodeled a bathroom, became a gourmet cook and was able to "be there" for my high school aged son.

It was the best 21 months of my life. Life has a way of presenting us with some interesting twists and turns. But for all the reality we grasp at... we're all just passing through. If you can't enjoy the trip, why make the journey?

Take this time to enjoy your life and continue to grow. Like me, you may find that money and security are really overrated. It's the ability to live completely in the moment that ultimately defines us makes us a better person.

With the people you've helped and the friends you've made in this community... you'll never want for anything.

My $0.02

Well said Jerome, and it sounds like you really made the most when you were let go. Way to go.

For me, we had one kid, and another one on the way. We were in the process of selling our house and buying a larger more expensive one.

We had already put a bid in on the new house and it was accepted, and our old house wasn't even on the market yet!

The wife and I had taken the day off to prep the house for the real estate agents open house (kick off the house sale and have the local real estate agents come by and see the house). We were working our butts off when the phone rang.

It was the VP of our dev dept from work. I knew something was up because I never talk to her. Anyway, she tells me I am laid off! And that I can come in the next day to get my stuff!

Holy shiite!

Plus, it was our 7th wedding anniversary that day! "Ahh, honey, happy anniversary! And oh yeah, I just got laid off...

Well, we kinda freaked, mainly because we we're sure we'd be able to afford the new house now, not to mention kid number two on the way, etc, etc.

We decided to calm down and see if we could somehow afford the new house on my wifes income and sure enough we could, so we moved ahead with everything and it all worked out just fine.

It was a stressfull experience, but it did all work out.

Hey Bill,
Welcome to the world of retirement! I have no doubt you'll love it. I was fortunate enough to retire from Bell Labs/Lucent in '99 at 52 and have never missed it a bit. I'm always busy, but I think partially because I move at my own (quite slow) pace...as those waiting for the next installment of the Tech publications cds and ROW FWSM can attest . Work if you want/need to but enjoy what you do and the time you now have. This may end up to be a true blessing for you.

Best
Jim

Best of wishes to ya Bill. You are obviously a very level headed & resourceful person! As was said, heck, you could do well as a traveling 928 mech! I've said before, I wish you lived closer to the Sunshine State! We have to endure the valleys in life to appreciate the mountains yes? Hope this becomes a blessing beyond what you could imagine!

Bill,
It is heartening to see you take this in such a positive way.
You will have a lot of fun doing all those HoneyDo's.
Come on down to TX and we can have a wenching party - I mean wrenching party.
Good luck.
Roger

My story is almost a carbon copy. Laid off after 7 years with a computer company run by monkeys. (Those commercials are great!)
Bill is older by 2 years though.
That was a year ago.
Now I'm having the time of my life.
I spend my time working on Porsche cars, going to car shows, meeting other shark owners, and generally have a great time.
Business has been real good and the people a pleasure to deal with.
I should have done this back in 86 when I restored my first 928 dashboard.

My best to you Bill and I look forward to meeting you again at SITM.

AND this means you will have more time to advise rennlisters. Looks like we all will benefit from this. What I see here is that people who are "prepared" and not saddled with debt can handle this withrelative ease. And wrenching is good for your head, don't forget to exercise. The wind is to your back, may it continue.

Sale? No. I might buy more. I'm down to 4 from 8 in the last 2 years.

87 GSX-R 750 - sold
75 400F - sold
76 400F - sold
90 YSR-50 - sold

Currently:
79 CBX - sounds better than a Ferrari
82 CBX
91 600F2
75 Norton Commando

Here's some pics from before I got the 79 and 90 when I had 6 of them out. See the 79 pic in link above.

Congrats Bill.

I too started the semi-retirement thing but I'm waay too young to make it full time, which gives me a while to sort out how much "non-standard" employment I care to deal with.

And the time freed up to spend with my new grand daughter, house projects, car projects, and trips this summer is all worth it.

You know you have your new schedule down pat when you really don't know, or care, what day of the week it is.
