X pipe pricing thread
Looking at a recent X pipe thread I read about pipes from several vendors but I was unable to find pricing and detail on some of those vendor websites. The products all look good so it might be hard to choose so I thought we would benefit from getting more information together.
Please keep this thread about pricing, configuration, options, shipping, and related information only and not about performance claims or 'who's better.' Just the facts.
What are the various options, pricing, differences? This is what I gathered from a quick skim of the available information, please add and correct as needed (but again, facts only.) I can update this post as more info comes in.
As of 4/07 (and in no particular order)
[The first three are said to all be the Motorsport pipe based on the Ott design further developed by Dave Lomas, all constructed by the same supplier. I do not know if the cats and hardware are handled by the resellers or not though.]
Motorsport's X pipe has a dyno chart, smaller reinforcing plates, has some cat options. Might have 2 O2 bungs located closer to the collector or are those for sample tubes? Looks like it slips over the stock exhaust and uses band clamps. Hardware unknown, price is said to be around $400. Shipping unknown. They are located in Salt Lake City, USA.
928 Motorsports uses a small reinforcing plate. It looks like it slips over the stock exhaust and uses band clamps. Hardware appears to be included. Price is listed as $488/$883 wo/w cats (2 way I think.) Add $110 for stainless. Shipping is $45/$60. They are located in Horicon WI USA.
928sRus resells the Motorsport X pipe, offers no cat option and includes some? hardware for $399.95 and offers an install kit for $25. As it is the Motorsports pipe it should be Aluminized and I believe it fits over the stock exhaust with some sort of wrap and clamp to seal it. Nothing on the website at this time. They are located near Dallas TX USA.
Jaeger's X pipe has large reinforcing plates, aluminized mild steel construction, no hardware, and uses a stock style rear slip fit connection for $399. No cat option. Shipping is unknown, and duty might be assessed for US buyers as Jaeger is in B.C. Canada. Jaeger is not a Rennlist sponsor, but it is said they have inquired about becoming a small business sponsor.
928 Specialists appears to have a different design, using a X crossover rather than two pipes touching. Modular design allows for cats to be removed and installed, stainless pipe included to bridge. Stainless steel construction, cats appear to be 2-way. $549/649 wo/w cats. Shipping unknown. They are in NC, USA.
Devek, I am not sure of their location and the website seems down. However I have this pricing info:
- $495; $995 w/cats (dyno sheet shows same performance increase)
- made to order in house at 1 or 2days notice
- clamps included
- optional coating(s) addt'l time/cost
I also found a direct fit stock replacement new 32v 928 converter assembly for under $400, DEC part number PO2608. The part's illustration shows a typical stock 32v 928 converter with headpipes and air tube.

The X sold by Motorsport, 928 Motorsports and 928RUS is the same pipe which was developed from one of the original X's by Mr. Ott.
The further development work was done by Dave Lomas and team at Motorsport who do all the manufacturing.

You might actually find that the X-over design was not invented by Dr. Gas who initially helped us with our design. There is another gentleman that has the patents and came to an agreement with Dr. Gas.
If you look at the design, it is not even close. Dr. Gas's first attempt was 10hp shy of Louie's design. It took a long time and hundreds of dyno runs to get what we have available for sale today. Just throwing an "X" into the exhaust will help but not even come close to what our system will do.
Hey Jim, how many do you want? We have a few lying around...probably 100 of each in stock.

That would be the fellow/company who recently threatened our vendors with legal action if they didn't stop using his trademarked term "X-pipe" to sell their products.

P.S.I have never figured out why no one has offered the down pipes without the X-over attached. It would be nice to be able to tune the system to an individual car!
