Why not to sell the 928S, why not to buy the S4, and did someone say Corvette?

1) - I'll give you $500 for it. If that sort of offer doesn't convince hime to keep it, then
2) - Screw the old man -- get yourself an S4.
3) - 84/85 vettes are complete crap. They were designed, with help from Goodyear, to get great skidpad results and last through a typical magazine(R&T, C&D) test drive and not much beyond that. Everyone I knew that had one was stranded by the computer at least a couple times. They are rickety, shakey, unreliable, buggy and bland inside & out. The first one or two on the street looked hot, but after that it was me-too forever. If your dad is really stuck on vettes all this will go in one ear and out the other -- see # 2 or make a better offer on #1. You can lead a horse to water....
At least he has the good taste to want a V8!

Dave, I'll take your wisdom. I already told my dad we'd be looking at 4-6k for the 928S, and he guffawed like I'd never seen. He was so suprised at how low the value is, he started saying that it wouldn't even be worth selling (as you predicted) and he said he might as well give it to...
my brother.
Hah! I said he should give it to me.... But I don't really want it. I think. Maybe I do.
I want to say it's just one of those weekly obsessions, but I know he's liked vettes since before he got his first shark, a blue OB 5-speed. I know he will never enjoy owning a vette - it's too rough and clumsy for him. But that doesn't mean he won't make a mistake and buy one anyway.
Him and V8s..... It's like he doesn't recognize 4 or 6 as a possible number. He doesn't realize I have more power in my 4-cyl than he does in his 8-cyl, and I have a whole lot less engine to maintain. But that sound.... there is no substitute.

Depending on who your dad is hanging with, he may be getting a lot of flack on the 928. When you say you tried to get him to the autocross but it was never running, that kind of says it all. An early 90s Vette witha chassis stiffener is a respectable car. Have you driven a lot of them ? Consider that your dad may just want a car to drive and not a car to wrench on, and that he may get more local status with a Vette.
Let him get what he wants, and you get what you want. Every generation has to aquire their own stuff. Glad to hear you are a 928 man. I'm a crazy car guy. I want to drive them all. It's like trying different beers. You might find that image and reality are two different things.

I'm not a 928 man, I'm just a porsche man. An FR porsche man, actually - I can't see myself with an ***-dragger, but anything with the engine in the front appeals to me!
I just found an '86 for even less than the S4 I had found... Is it worth $1200 to get the S4 body style, hmm......
I'm not going to FORCE my dad to do anything. It's just that we have always seen 99% eye-to-eye when it comes to cars, and we both respect and consider each other's tastes. I know him and I know he wouldn't like a vette. He's admitted before he hates the way they ride. I'm just afraid he might buy this one because it's shiney. It might be a binge thing. It may very well be that he's just sick of the "project porsche". I know for a fact that he's getting flack.
His friend whose corvette he's eyeing, is his former employee, who now has a bigger business than his. Kind of a blow to the ego (and my dad has a V8 ego).
My dad picked the wrong time to throw in the towel - it's really almost done! Besides the alignment, it's mechanically healthy and reliable! I even bought him some decals for the rear "porsche" indent as a sort of icing on the finished cake.
Anyway I thought it might be good to show the 928S we're talking about. Sorry I don't have a better pic - I'll have my bro take more pics!
This car has about 45k original miles.

Geeeze! You dad wants to sell a shark he's spent 10 yrs getting almost perfect?!.... a shark with only 45k miles!!! And for an '85 vette no less!! ok.... not to be tough on your pop, but I think his former employee is slippin him some of that special coolaid if he thinks thats a wise move! My brother had a brand new '84 vette, the 1st year of that model change. I remember how much he used to bitch about it constantly! Think he told me later that within the couple years he owned it, they had replaced like SEVEN headlight motors for him!
Maybe for dad it truly is more of the pursuit of perfection instead of finally getting there. If everything I've ever heard about those years vettes is true, then he'll get his wish & spend the next 10 yrs trying to get it rehabbed too! Problem is, even when he gets there, it'll never be anywhere close to what he has in his 928! I say, what ever he does, find a way to keep that shark in the family! I would bet within a year, he'll be wanting it back again! If not, I am certain you'll have a long line of 928ers on here wanting to take that shark off his hands!

Wow, you sound like my father and I. ...Although, I could not see my father ever purchasing a corvette, even if it was shiney. It was hell buying the 928! He's a tightwad...
Just hang out with him 24/7 and if he gets any dumb corvette ideas, just knock him on the ground or something. Whilst doing that- give the car a nice wet-sanding!

Arash,
You wanted ammo, not opinions. I think you've got some here. The first few years of any new model are a little shaky, they were especially so with the '84 Corvette.
I used to LOVE that new body style when it first came out. I even vowed (in my naive youth) to get one someday. I was a major Corvette fan as well. In the next few years though, everyone who drove one was complaining about something. Sometimes you have to turn, and that model doesn't corner well at all, it just hops around corners.
If half of the bad things I've heard about those cars is true it's not worth a second look.
I've heard people say that the reason you drive a Porsche is for status and appearances. He has one and must know that it's about the substance of the car design, not just the appearance. He shouldn't trade that for what he's basically admitting is just appearances (since he admits himself that they aren't comfortable and don't handle well).
Mel said it best when he said 'keep it in the family' because he'll want it back at some point.

I own a S4 and a 87 C4, there is no comparison in the two for the most part.
The S4 is just a better car, the C4 is a more fun car around town and more like a go-kart, they rattle, shake, and leak, even restored like mine is.
If he is set on a C4, the 84-early 86 is a no-no as far as i am concerned, steel heads and some other issues.
My pick of the C4's (non ZR-1) is the 88-89 models because you can use latter model wheels and the chassis is less flexible with the top off than the 90-96, but the latter ones do have better engines and the dash is far better.
On the plus side they are a cheap and there is a lot of them out there, the down side is you can spend far more $$ getting them right than what they are ever going to be worth.

I have never owned a C4 (although I had a C3), but I have driven many of them over the years. I agree with everyone that said that they rattle and shake excessively on uneven pavement. The 928 is much more comfortable to sit in and drive. There is a "cool" factor with a Corvette, but the ride quality (and squeaks and rattles) wore on me after awhile. I personally would rather have an C3 because they are easier to work on and modify (and I like they way they look), but they squeak and rattle too!

Take the 928 -- let him get the shiny vette. Quietly wet-sand the car, finish it up, and add the necessary finishing touches: H4's, 17"+ rims, and a stage II SC. You'd be into all of this for less than an S4, I'm guessing... and at the first opportunity, smoke him in his toy pimp-wagon, then sell the S back to him for whatever you put into the "finishing touches" plus a $1,000 "that was stupid" fee.

Good friend of mine had an 87 C4 and a euro 928S- he said the 928 was like a cheetah, and C4 was like an elephant.....
Plus, 20" chromies on a Vette??? Just come out of Pimp My Ride? Yuk...
