You are right ,I thought USA cars had an extra bar in the door (federal regs.) other than the one in the pic. which I have seen before on UK cars.
Looking at PET there isn't one !

This is a perfect example as to why you should never remove your intrusion bars in the quest for a lighter car. Are you listening Ken?

That is one lucky guy. I would have agreed with one of the previous posts that the guy probably wasn't wearing his seatbelt until you see it still clicked in place.

Made me think of this Subaru hit from a while ago. www.bongmonster.com The guy was even luckier and had no major injuries.

Try that in a Mustang or a Subaru and your family will be buying you a coffin instead of a card.
Maybe not in a Mustang but I'd take a Subaru over the 928 in safety. The A and B pillars are on of the few parts on cars that many jaws of life can't even cut through and are consistently the top rated impact cars.

Again, I'm glad the driver came out the other side of this and I hope his recovery goes well.

With that kind of impact, without a seatbelt the injuries would have been a whole lot worse

He's got 4 or 5 others and this new one just got away from him? Wow. I wonder if there was something different about it or if he was just not paying attention. He must have been moving pretty good to wrap it around a tree that far.

He is lucky and the car 'crumpled' enough to absorb it quite nicely.

Is it too soon to check on parts?

John,

Glad he is alright after that hard of a hit!!

Now for the feeding. Do you think I can get the transmission from the car?

NO John

I would expect Joe to keep the GT & transfer over the running gear to a nice '89 auto he brought engineless.
IIRC Joe said the GT made 7 928's he has.

I'm sure entire car is already split online by locals.

My guess is that if there wasnt a central tube, but rather a regular drive shaft, it would be wrapped around that tree a bit more. Lucky guy! Give him our best.

Check out the cloth seats also. Very nice GT!

The industrial-strength seat saved his life, in my opinion. With that impact, there was almost ZERO chance that he would have survived. We should be reading his obituary. How fast do we think he was going? Btw, I thank God that he is OK And he looks like Elton John.

It is just a car, but .... this one had No sunroof or sidestrips !
Unlike USA 928's I don't think ROW 928's have the extra reinforcing safety bar in the door.
Lets not create urban myths and legends with what we think we believe. If you don't know a fact it is better to not state anything or ask a question.

Here is what Porsche says;

1985 MY

Door reinforcement worldwide. Sekuriflex windscreen. Four-valve technology standard on the 928 S with catalytic converter. Marine engine for racing boats, 8-cylinder bi-turbo engine (based on the 928), max output 700 bhp plus. Ceramic portliners in the 944 Turbo. ABS standard in the Porsche 928 S.

MY 85 euro has them along with the ABS and 3 layer windshield.

And like normy said, a busted hip is a BIG deal, hope he does well.

That aside, I'm glad he wasn't killed! A broken pelvis is a VERY SERIOUS crippling injury! Hello?

Your point is made however. Porsche's hand-built GT shows it's strength once again, this time by saving someone's life. Try that in a Mustang or a Subaru and your family will be buying you a coffin instead of a card.

N!
Sorry, had to say something on your 'Subaru comment'. I used to have a blaze-yellow WRX, and it's probably the most well built Japanese car on the market. Remarkable trash test ratings. The car is designed to crash and crumple in a certain way, which covers the drivers and passengers making it 'not as easy' to die. Granted- if the car flew off a plateau, barrel rolled down a mountain and raped a tree like this 928 did... it probably would look worse! :]
