Thumbs up Bill Ball's Custom Momo Steering Wheel Install Guide

I will be installing a Momo Club 4 Steering Wheel on my '88S4 and was going to do a foto How-to...when I remembered that I'd gotten the directions some time ago from Bill Ball's web site. It's so well written that I could never do as well. At any rate his link is still up and running but I didn't want to link to it without his permission. Bill would you mind posting your "momo wheel" site? It also can be Googled.

From what I can tell, the Club 4 steering wheel has been or is being phased out and another model taking its place. I really like the Club 4 wheel and will be interested in seeing what could ever be good enough to replace it. Also, I don't know if the Porsche crest center caps are still available or not. I paid $50 for the one I got....from the source mentioned in Bill's great writeup.

Frankly, I'm not a great fan of the stock 928 steering wheel nor stock wheels (except for D90s, Sport Wheels, and Cup designs). My personal tastes tell me that the two things that can most modernize a 928 is to install an up-to-date steering wheel and running wheels with good road tires on them.

Note: The installed wheel is on Bill Ball's car. That install's going to be hard to beat!

I have the 3-spoke version of that wheel, and really like it. Did not know you could get the Porsche center cap- very nice!

Bill - I see on your lower left pod switch position you have a washer switch - is that stock for a USA '89? - so your pod reset is on the AC/central lock button instead (seems that was only on an '89...) is this washer switch location also only on an 89? do you have it on the column stalk also? does the switch do just regular wash or intensive?

There was another post recently on the phantom connector for this switch (euro '89's) - I was unaware of it before...

Harvey

Link away. My write-up is overkill. Also, some of the links are now dead. I'll try to fix that. Anyway, here it is.

http://www.billsworkshop.com/P928S4/momo/momo_club4.htm

I love the Club 4. They have gone out of production. I love it so much I bought a spare recently in case the first one wears out (I have 100K miles on it).

Alan:

That's the stock layout for 89. That's the intensive washer button. Not sure when it might have been moved elsewhere.

Nice write up Bill.

One thing to note with the Momo wheel install, is, if your horn does not work after install, it may be because the hub extender part is not making contact with the small contact tab on the steering column.

On my install, I had to gently bend/pry the metal tab up. Be careful not to bend it to far or it could break. I also cleaned the tab a bit with electric contact cleaner, then used an eraser on it too.

Here's a pic of area I'm talking about with the arrow pointing to the metal contact tab:

Bill,
I think in '90 it went to the new lower pod switch spots to either side of the wheel boss behind the stalks (each side there is a combined potentiometer and a switch position) ROW had the dash illum. pot & dash reset switch on the left (while US had a switch blank there w/ switch on the lower left pod) and all had wiper interval pot & intensive wash switch to the right.

Seems like '89 went in a new direction and was then changed again significantly for '90...

The club 4 has a great feel to it...Bill & Rich both have one (lucky).....I guess I'll have to settle for the 930S wheel....

I just installed a Momo steering wheel yesterday. With the help of this thread and tips from Rixter (the one I bought the steering wheel from), I had it installed in under 30 minutes. The horn worked on the first try too! Once again, thanks Rennlist. It is nice when a project goes as planned!
