Dear All, (1985, US, 32v, 5.0L, Auto),
Well, when I aquired my 928 I had no kind of spare tire cover (or spare tire for that matter) and to top it off the material under the carpet was dry rotted horribly bad and shedded everytime I lifted the carpet. It looks like Porsche used a burlap sack to cover the underside of the rear carpet, WTF is up with that? Anyway, I cut a piece a birch to shape and then I stained and clearcoated it to a mirror shine and installed it. I then got some black carpet stuff from Autozone (it was like 8 bones for a roll of it) and I used spray adhesive to hold the original carpet to the new backing (, after I removed all the burlap stuff of coarse). So here are some pics of the final result showing the progress of the install.

Thanks for the compliments. I wish that I could do a bunch more wood like that on the interior. I think that I will remove all the speaker covers next and put a similar birch cover over the holes.

SunnyD is right, that birch looks great and nice job with the fitment.
Is the carpeting covering only the right side or is this the carpet laying on top as shown in your last pic.

Rng,
Nice work.
Take out your door panel inserts and use them as a template, you can do them in wood like I did. I'm sure it would look nice.

Thanks for the idea. I hate that crappy %$^#@*!!^#$!!***!!! fiber underlayment atached to the original carpet, and I tore most of mine out and trashed it. Whew! Felt good to get rid of it. Of course, now my carpet is flimsy. I think I'll try your idea of installing a better underlayment glued to the original carpet.

Danglerb, that was funny on the piano joke. My girlfriend made a similar one. I am glad it looks nice even though no one will see it.
So the clip goes under the carpet? I will have to look at that when i get home. Thanks for the heads up!
P.S. Do yall see that little tire lock disk thing? I have no need for it so it is free to a good home to the 1st pm I get for it, all you pay is shipping.

Ive used that carpet on 944s rear hatch numerous times, the carpet is pretty good and wont fray. Luckily my 928s were okay, but your new job looks just as factory!

I made a new rear luggage area mat from that carpet. The gold stuff is almost the same color as the champaign interior on mine. The original mat is rolled up carefully and stored away out of the sun. The new cheapy stuff has a backing of carpet pad glued to it. Plus, velcro sticks directly to the fuzzy side so the changer doesn't slide around. You wouldn't know it's not original just looking at it, even right next to the Sliverknit original stuff on the rear seatbacks. The edges are tucked under the side panels, the tool panel, and the front edge is rolled around and glued so that velcro on the front edge holds it in place nicely. It's also cut to fit over the rear hooks for the net. So no raw edges and no sewing/binding needed. Roll carpet from the Pep Boys store, btw.
