Because my goal is the original look. Sound quality isn't that important to me. I do want something better than what I've got, but I don't want to butcher my interior to do it. I understand that others do have different goals...

The problem is NOT just the depth of the speaker, but the size of the magnet. Mine were marginal on actual depth, but the interference was caused by the larger diameter of the magnet.....

I did the same in the rear and back deck. System sounds huge and clear now with top of the line Premier speakers. Sorry but the stock sizing plus the muffling of the skin add up to lack luster audio performance. Plus if you add a satalite tweeter in line and mount it next to the 6.5 you almost achieve the later year's look.
Because a speaker grill & the perforated skin together looks tacky.

Priorities. I just can't predict where the lust to keep it stock will bite, but this looks like a puncture. Its a big part of what makes an 83 distinct, and I think it is the last year with the grilles starting in 84.

Sound quality is relative, and the ear tends to get used to whatever you have over time, so all you really lose is the impress somebody else factor. Eric at SpeakerWorks who will be doing the install thinks anything less than about $6k is a serious compromise, but also has plenty of customers who want "good" sound and 100% factory looks. I'm just a few steps down the food chain from most.

Pioneer TS-P462 may have the depth stated from the back of the mounting plate, so I am hunting around to find out what the depth might be from the front. I haven't found them in any local shop yet, but many online places have them for $85 shipped or less including Amazon.com. Looks like they were made to fit GM cars and trucks with depth limits and 4x6 sized spots, like an S10.

Factory Blaupunkt magnet is just shy of 2.25" in diameter, which is pretty small, plus the plate style speakers have the woofer offset from the center. Its annoying too since most larger magnets in car stuff is more cosmetic than functional.

If a 3.5" or 4" round is all the works, then thats all the works. I should know sometime tomorrow when I head out for some more hands on checking.

True That's why I have decided to reskin the doors when I do the insert panels. In the mean time, It's not really noticable unless you're inspecting the car. The sat tweets cover most of the perferations that are left.

+1 from me, cheap 8" Bazooka makes many factory speaker totally tolerable. We have a CS8A5 in our two other cars and it works very well. The trick to it is the factory speakers need to be "high passed" through a crossover to remove the bass and send it all to the subwoofer.

The holes may need to be enlarged by a machinist, but the plate itself may be very useful.

Does anyone have photos of the original rear speakers from an OB, including the plate?
It's not quite as ridiculous as it sounds in writing. Here are the stock speakers:

Use of a plate like the one shown in danglerb's photo, or fabrication of a similar thin plate may enable use of a flush back-mount speaker such as the 4x6 plate from Polk. Alternately, if you are willing to remove and re-install the vinyl or leather on the quarter panel, you can just re-drill the panel and re-install the bolts to fit the pattern of your new speakers. It may be a good idea to physically measure any speakers that you are considering. Many manufacturers don't give a back-mounted depth measurement. Also, as mentioned, many coaxial speakers have tweeters that stick out beyond the mounting surface.

Here are the speakers I used:

They are cheap, but should still be an improvement over stock. High frequencies will at least be improved. I would not expend much effort in trying to get better bass out of the quarter panel speakers, as the quarter panel is not much of an enclosure. Just get a spare tire sub like this one:

Sorry for the confusion. No, the new 4x6's I used will not work as drop in replacements. They are slightly smaller than the original speakers and the bolt holes don't line up. I had to fabricate adapters from 3/8" plywood as described in my first post. I don't think any standard 4x6 or 5x7 speakers will be a direct fit. The bolt hole spacing on the stock speakers is approx. 4.3" by 4.3" square.

As with the door speakers, the major obstacle here is the very shallow mounting space available. My advice would be to find something that fits into the shallow space, and then worry about how to attach it.

CLARIFICATION: The speakers pictured were out of the rear quarter panels. I have not looked at my door speakers yet.

Here are some odd ones, they have the magnet in the front for super shallow mounting.
