Default MOTOR OIL Q

What kind of oil you guys runnin? I have an '84 Euro. I see, on some of the service records I received when I bought my car, Devek was putting in Mobil 1 Syn 15w50. Is this cool or is there something I need to know?

Thanks!

Rob

That's fine. Many here use it.

Bigrob,

You need to know the name Doug Hillary. Search for his posts and read them, particularly his "oil analysis" reports, of which I think there are 11 now.

Rob,
I've used Mobil 1 15 W 50 in my several 928's for the past several years. I will continue to use it in my track '89 S4 5 speed, but have changed to using a GOOD fully synthetic 5W40 in the '94 GTS highway car. This change is based on several articles emphasizing good flow characteristics needed for good oiling, and the fact that lower viscosity enhances that. Doug Hillary's site and comments are among those I've relied upon. Currently using Shell Rotella 5W40 synthetic in that car. I use Mobil 0W30 fully synthetic in my wife's Lexus.

Anybody know if this is cheaper via 40 gallon barrels?

I had a lot of problems buying Mobil 1 15W 50 over the last 6 months. Buying wholesale is pennies cheaper and not worth the large quantity.
Seen again in Walmart just recently and overall paying about $7 a quart.

I think I may go with M1 5w-40. Doug mentions this oil to be a good choice! I hate this topic. There are always so many opinions! I've gone round & round on the Vett forum on the same topic. I like to stick with the manufactures recommended choice, but my car is an '84, & I know there have been some advances since then on the quality of motor oil!

Once again thanks!

I switched both my 81 and 84 over to M1 15w-50 several months ago and have not seen any problems.
Where others are experiencing availability problems with 15w-50; I can still get it by the quart or case at several places here in the PNW. I see availability problems with 5w-40!

Last time I was in Target, it was $5.90-something per quart.
