I too had my Girl out this Saturday along with my Buddy driving his 911 Targa. Beautiful sunny skies a little cold though, had a BLAST getting sideways on a number of occasions through corners in 2nd gear. At one point we came to an intersection and instead of doing a three point turn, I locked the wheel, hit the revs, and dropped the clutch- doing a wild 180- fishtailing- on the throttle all the way, and caught a chirp into second before redlining it into 3rd at which point I was approaching tripple digits on this country road, hit 4th before hard on the binders coming over a blind hill. 5 Speeds w/ LSD are the SH*T!

Oh I don't know about that Brian

My power tends to drop off at 6300 in 4th gear.
3rd gear has plenty of life in it!

Heck, i am so traction limited right now its not even funny. I thought about putting the bigger pulley back on just to tone things down about...only for about 2 seconds though . At freeway speeds where traction is better, it giddys up and goes.
My next set of tires will be a good sticky street tire...then i will see how long the TT lasts.

I wouldnt mind having a 5psd, for the "sports car" feel of it, but im very happy with my auto!

I think one of the things that makes the 928 unique is how good the auto trannies are. My '85 auto is by far the best automatic tranny car I've ever driven.

And when I first got it, the guys on the PacNW 928 list told me "you're shifting it manually, right?", which, up to that point, I was not. So I got the drill from them, and ever since, I've always manually shifted the auto. Makes for a hell of a lively ride.

But, I still prefer a stick shift for a sports car, and my feelings were confirmed again yesterday on my romp.

And I guess I was a bit delusional thinking I could post a topic about how much I like my 5 sp over my auto tranny 928 and think it would not turn into an auto vs 5 sp debate.

Oh well, just call me "Troll Bait Boyd" from now on.

Kinda funny how the cycle seems to always go, more power, bigger tires, more power. I figure if I can convince myself to stay with a "reasonable" rear tire size like 245 I could save a bundle on power upgrades I wouldn't bother to get.

I'm not complaining.....but the 5 speed with third & third in the 2.54 autos just seem to have a touch more pep than mine.....but I'm sure between 120-140 when the 2.54 is in 4th and mines in 3rd mine would feel stronger....its all relative!

It wouldn't do this if it was underpowered!!

Interesting that you mention that because my favorite twisty loop is often wet from all the rain we get up here, and yesterday was no exception. You have to be VERY careful with your inputs or you'll be in ditch or kissing a tree right quick.

Yesterday I had a few instances of burning rubber in 2nd gear coming out of tight turns and I was loving it.

About a year ago, I sold my NA '83 944 and one of the reasons was the lack of torque. I used to love taking that car on my twisty loop, but I remembered it always felt lacking in the torque department.

So yesterday, I was thrilled to take the S4 on the same loop, and of course there was a noticeable difference in the amount of thrust that I had available and I was loving. So, I was also thinking "thank god I sold the 944 and got the 928".

Uh....that's 145 Brian.

Ed, congrats on your 5 speed love affair.

As long as it makes you happy dude, don't worry about what us A/T owners say, we understand that you are totally delusional and have no idea what your talking about.

The world would be a damn boring place if we all liked the same things!

I vote 5spd all the way!

Yeah I've driven both and I would be the first to admit (coming from a V8 MB) that the tranny is awesome, but there truly is nothing like choosing exactly which gear you want and being able to completely control the car. Maybe I'm just a control freak

Either way good to see you're enjoying the car!

Spoken like a true manual transmission enthusiast.

I think thats what so frustrating for us A/T owners, is that the above truly is a misplaced statement. Those that are accomplished "manual" A/T drivers do choose exactly what gear we want to be in. Obviously, we are not going to be able to lug 4th gear at 1K rpms, or accidentally shift into 1st when we think we're going for third, but for the most part we get to pick our gear. This whole "control" issue isn't an issue. I can understand someone liking the 5 speed ratios better than the 4 speed, or having to clutch for gear selection, but when it comes to performance driving, on the pipe and in the powerband, the A/T can and will react just like the manual. If it doesn't, then the pilot hasn't put enough time into tweaking the car and their driving style. JMHO.
