Design Decision - help wanted
I am in the process of painting my lastest acquisition. It came from a body shop where the paint was stripped and the owner got busy with running his business and then found his kids had out grown the back seats.
So I get it with no paint - a great place to start. As I am doing the minor body work and prep I noticed they stripped the rock guard off the rocker panels, lower doors and the lower part of the fender. I have some UPOL which is what Porsche used and can easily match the original look.
So the question is - would the car be better looking without the roughness of the original rocker panels. The car has no side moldings. It is an 86.5 S and I am thinking of eliminating the ugly front spoiler and maybe even the rear spoiler.
The color is black with a black interior. So comments. Who thinks the rough rockers look better and who thinks a smooth highly polish finish to the lower extremes of the car looks better.

It might look good in the begining but if you are going to drive it much, those panels will look like crap pretty quickly. That stuff was put there for a reason.

Porsche put the rough finish on for a very GOOD reason. It is a rubber coating that resists stone chips. It may look good at first with a smooth finish, but in a year of driving you may not have much paint left in the area where it should have had the coating. On the other hand you could install the clear bra stuff in that area and maybe have the best of both worlds.

Keep it stripped, put a little primer over part of the hood and one rear qtr. Then get a "Get-R-Done" vynal sticker on the back window, and a couple nekid lady mudflaps...Then park it in the front yard and let grass grow up around it. You'll have the first custom redneck shark.
I would skip the rocker treatment, personaly I it smooth. I have seen a few sharks with champagne seats on black and it looks killer. I'm not a fan of the no spoiler look, but that's truly up to personal taste. However if you ever want to sell it in the future, you may want the spoilers back on.

Agree with perry and jim. Just had my 944 painted and while it looks very clean without the guards there are obvious problems starting where the guards should be. If you get rid og the front spoiler you will be left with the breke duct vents hanging low.

Strip it. Smoother, more aerodynamic, sleeker. Lose spoilers. Flush the glass like all modern cars. Lose door locks. Lose light squirters. Lose roof gutters.
