TIMMING BELT Q
I am a little confused. I have a 928 service manual & in the sectin about checking the timming belt tension, there are 2 different tools used. A 9131 & a 9201. There is no explaination for the application of which tool to use. I see that the HTD belt is used on '83 models & up. Are these 2 different tools specific for the type of belt in your car?

The 'original' 9131 checking tool was the one with the spring. No longer available. Later cars were treated to the one with the dial. One of the better Rennlisters has started to mfr a replacement for both, in the spring style. It only works for the 928 timing belt however; the 9201 will test other Porsches (944/968) and also the alternator belt on the 928, fwiw.
You can order the Kempf tool from 928 International (and other places) for about 10% of the new cost of that 9201. It's a lot easier to use too.
If you post your location, somebody nearby might be willing to loan you the tool and maybe even help with the tension check. It's been known to happen in my neighborhood and in others around the country. Otherwise it's cheap enough (<$100 last time I looked) to own your own, especially if you do your own work on the car.
