Talking It's tyre time for my 84.

My rear tires are wearing out. I can't seem to find the perilli P7000 225/50ZR16 91W that are on it all round. So I'll be replacing all four. The only thing I find in this exact size ie: aspect ratio, are Bridgstone potenza. Any other suggestions for tires?

84-928S auto. Stock wheels.
The beast of the Blue Ridge. Eats asphalt and leaves little piles of Volkswagons on the road.

Pap - do a search. This has been discussed a go-zillion times. You will find MUCH good info, and lots of opinions. You should be able to find about 25-30 different tire models in that size.

Take a look at Avon techM 500. Put them on my '81 a few month ago and love em.

papatuki - stock as well...

Fuzion ZRI's work extremely well on SATA, are inexpensive and wear is good after ~14k thus far; that said, they are warm weather tires so their performance is less in cold weather unless warmed up, albeit still extremely predictable but at an earlier threshold. Work well in rain. Driving style very spirited.

Falken ZIEX ZE-52's work very well on The Blue Car. Not quite the high grip of the ZRI's, but very good traction, quiet and predictable at threshold. They are inexpensive and all weather cold/rain traction is very good. Only have ~1500mi on them, but appear to wear well. Driving style spirited.

Good luck!!

Do a search find Tirerack they offer 83 different tires in your size... including some Bridgestone Potenza RE 050A on sale for $80 (were $154) , Sumitomo HTRZ for $61 , Yokohama AVS ES 100 for $83 as well as various high priced spreads ... Frankly for street driving 99.9 % of the time tires are tires ... and they are ALL vastly better than they were 20 years ago ...

Listen to Jim...

I just bought a set of (slightly used...100 miles) Carrera III wheels for my '91 and had the Bridgestone RE050A Pole Positions mounted on them. WOW! That's all I can say, and it's been so cold, that I really haven't seen their full potential. Now I'd rather spend the money on track tires, but since I'm unable to get there for another 6 months or so; I dropped the dough on these. Very nice and supposed to get some mileage out of them, despite the low hardness/wear rating (140).

Best of luck,

As you said 'tyres' ( vs 'tires'), market recommendations depend on where you are located.
One of the better buys here are the Toyo T1R's .....

Toyo's
Fuzion's

Yoko AVS ES-100 (Great when new...NOISY-AS-HELL after about 5k miles!)
Pirelli P-Zero's (WORST tire I've had on my shark...noisy...tramline...NOT sticky!)

The above based on my personal experiences! YMMV!!

TireRack, and take your time, if your can wait for a really good deal. A month ago they had the top rated Goodyear D3 in our size for $89 a tire, half price. Its a rotten snow tire, but very good wet or dry. Can't say I have any issues with the Kumho tires that came on my car.

I did a serch for tyres in the forum but only have a few hours to search through the results. Found nothing. To the rest of you. Thanks for the leads. I'm a bit of a D.S., but love my car and am a technition by trade.I can do the work. I inherited this beast and have fallen in love, I'm the third brother to own it since new, but need some mentoring. Don't really know what to do first. Don't be too hard on me Mark. And what color is Shielferblaumetallic?

Try searching for "TIRES" or "TIRE"

Sorry if I came off being 'hard'...was unintentional.

This is just one of those topics that has been thouroughly discussed many, many times.

You're already getting good advice above!!

(PS - Post your location...if you're in the states, it is VERY HARD to beat Tirerack.com!)

I just got that size tire set and wrestled with the same decision. I reviewed the threads on here, and also the tire rack reviews (which I found very helpful).

I had P6000's on it, and they flat spotted bad just like a previous set I had on a Volvo sedan... so I made a jump and got the Kuhmo SPT's. Only have a 1000 miles on them, but I really like them. Quiet, plenty sticky (good trip through the REAL twisties last weekend), and no flat spot issues... and only $67 each through tirerack (ZR rated SPT's)

I have a buddy in GA that has his own mount/balance equipment due to the motorcycle racing stuff... so I went down and mounted sets for the 928 and the 20" tires on my truck.. the Kuhmos required very little weight to bring true (there was 7 oz on one tire with the pirellis), and they have a significant lip around the bead that serves to stabilize the sidewall... all in all, I'm impressed and will buy again when I wear these out!
