Flying Dog,
It already has a REAL TRANSMISSION why would you want to spoil it?

I think its still worth taking a look at the car. PPI? Mandatory if you are not familiar with 928. I thought it was awkward he did not reply about the mileage question. On the other hand, he may have all the fender benders well documented and a good reason why he only drove it 20 miles in 5 years.

What is your email? I will forward you the email I got from him.

I tried to buy this car but got there late. He had promised it to another buyer and gave him until the end of that week to arrange financing. I had money in hand, but he had given his word and the guy got the money. It was a very nice car, but had a few minor issues,as well as a re-spray. The mileage wasn't correct and the seller readily admitted it. The odometer broke five years earlier. He had receipts from dealers and fixed the odometer just to sell it. He had not driven it much however for the past three years because he couldn't get it out of his driveway.....to steep. I had to park in the street and walk up the hill. Seller was a doctor, stand up guy too, and orignal owner. He had taken it to dealer prior to putting it up for sale and had it gone over. He ws selling because he was getting married and needed the garage space. I was 2 or 3 days late getting there or I would have bought it. Should it show up again, the original seller will not be happy. His intent was to sell only to an enthusiast and to no one looking to turn a profit. Thought everyone would want to know. I'm still smarting from the loss I never had, although considering the odometer issue and the re-spray, $32500 was probably all the money. It was very very tight though and spotless inside.

Things happens for a reason. Hopefully you will end up with a nicer GTS. So what is the estimated mileage?

I doubt it has more than 60k on it. The guy lives in midtown Atlanta, which requires very little driving day to day. Judging by the normal wear items, seats, wheel wells, steering wheel, etc it could be a 2 or 3 year old car. Even the carpet looked unmolested and he had not even detailed it. His explanation of the paint made sense and was believable. he moved to S FL for a couple of years and the car sat outside during the day. Paint of the roof, hood was faded, so he painted the whole car.. Not something most of us would do, but he's a doctor. I lived in Ft laudrdale for thee years and my cars all faded. When I moved to Atl, I got rid of them all. I told him Porsche was planning the Panamera or maybe even a 2 door derivative and I could see the lust in his eyes.

The odometer is digital and the only way to replace it is with a new main Circuit Board. A new board requires that you set the milage or start from zero within the first 250 miles.
If that was done by a reputable dealer they would have set the milage as per the broken unit and documented it.
They of course could have used a used CB with the milage of the donor.

What Rog said.

And this is the first time I've heard of the odometer in an 89+ breaking. Not saying they cannot. Just never heard of it.

I guess he could have faked me out, but he had documentation from the dealer, although i didn't check it closely because I didn't wind up buying the car. He did spend a significant amount of money just before he sold it. Easy to do at Jim Ellis Porsche though.

That is same process as 996 I suppose. A new unit can be changed upward by Porsche tester 2, but not after it has some number of miles on it.

I checked into this car before I bought Tim Delarms 88 S4 back in October...it has been for sale since last spring or summer. it is a consignment through a local classic car dealer in Gainesville, GA.

It seems to with 90k miles and possible work to be done, that the price was not attractive enough...maybe high 20's??? I did not see it in person because the car was not at the dealers shop. The owner would have to bring it in.

Pricing a GTS is such an interesting exercise. Not sure the same rules apply that you might use to price pre-GTS. Given the changes to the body and engine I really don't think of it as a 928. As my GTS is going to turn 90k shortly I am an interested party. I believe the GTS will always fetch more or at least I hope so. YMMV.

How much better is a GTS than an S4? Are they really twice as good? I'm not asking to start an arguement. I am going to buy a 928 of some persuasion. At this point I am going for the best one I can find. This is my second run at it. I started last year, then had a heart attack in May. Just now feeling like roaming the country side again.

When looking at other Porsches, I would have to say that some 911s are twice as good as others, but the pricing differential is not quite as broad, although a late 993 is worth more than an early 996. Another anomoly n Porsche prices.....Wonder is it's just a fender flare soort of thing

You're probably right. I was in the Boise (ID) airport this AM and they have a new Hummer on display for $29,995. I asked myself, "Self, which would I take..the Hummer or the GTS?" Self said GTS but most "regular" people would probably spring for any number of new/used cars for $30K.

It's all opinion because they all have different strengths. IMO the ultimate 928 is an 86 ROW (euro) 5 speed. Less complication, most likely all leather, classic body, and in the real word nothing much is quicker.(cept maybe the rarest of them all the SE)

All this gts-centric talk sounds more like non-928 owner talk and a little bit of wallet talk mixed in. Very little to do with functionality.
