Default Can you log knock sensor data?

I am installing an Innovate Motorsports DL-32 soon and would like to log knock sensor data.
Does anyone know how and where to pick up this data?
I know I can see it with the SharkTuner but the ST wont be permanently connected, the DL-32 will be and it has the ability to send signals to an external device, for example a shift light can be set up and triggered at any rpm you choose so I was hoping to have a small led triggered by knock events...

Anyone know if this is possible?

I need to know which wire and what voltage it sends signal on so I can get the DL-32 to capture it...

Pin 4 on the 12 way diagnostic plug on your '88. Just above pin 2 (ground pin)

Many thanks John,
I didn't want to wear out my welcome by emailing you directly on this since I know I'll be sending you some SharkTuner files to look over once I resume the SharkTuning...

Can I anticipate the signal I capture on that wire to be of a certain voltage and can you or anyone else tell me what it will be so I can set up the DL-32 to make use of it?
And thanks again for all the help!

Default 86 knock addition

Can you add a knock sensor to an 86?

On the '88 they are installed into the top of the engine below the intake and obviously the LH is set up to deal with it where your computer won't be..if I understand the way things work (someone will no doubt be along to set me straight if not )

So basically it would be very expensive to do that and have it work the way the newer models do.
I saw in a post by Louie Ott I believe where he was talking about just having tried the addition of EZK diagnostics to the SharkTuner and in that thread there was some discussion of adding knock sensing by way of an after market device, kind of like a small microphone that you fasten to the engine and it hears the knock event and sends signal to whatever you have "listening". Do a search on EZK and Louie Ott and you will find it.

I don't think you will be able to have the '86 models computer temporarily retard timing the way it happens on the newer models though....

IIRR much earlier 4.7L blocks have places ready for plugs which were later used as sensor mounting points. At least that isn't limiting their installation.

I'm considering one of these to add a knocking light to my '86.

KnockSense

There's a version with an output for a datalogger, too.

This requires a Hall sensor setup as well and later EZK.

Tampa -
For an '86 there is no provision in the EZF for knock sensing. It would be a DIY system along the lines that Ken is pointing. The tricky bit is finding a way of applying a suitable amount of retard once the knocks are detected.

Craig,
It is a 5v signal.

Hey guys, This is an interesting subject for me. I wouldered how I can monitor the output of a knock sensor for tuning purposes rather than relying on a set of headphones to listem for knock. Is this what we are talking about here?
Does anyone know the range in Voltage for the transducers?

Hello Glenn,
The signals from the transducer are quite low level (couple of 100mV), and you also need filtering to wipe out all the other noise the transducer will pick up. The knocksense box that Ken has shown does these things.

But what are you going to do with that processed signal ? Control what ?

OK, I think I'm on to something here, thanks to John for the proper location to read the signal.
I tapped into the 12 pin plug for the diagnostic port, pin 4, and sent that wire to the DL-32 (similar to the Aux Box). Then set that wire's channel up to read dwell and here's my first attempt.
I don't know if it just noise since the scale was set from 0 to 5 volts and these little spikes are only going up to just under 3 volts...but they do correspond with my putting my foot in it as you can see by the RPM and G forces spiking at the same time...
I guess until I use the SharkTuner to log EZK at the same time I won't know for sure but it does look promising. Well, promising that I'm able to log the data anyway, not promising that I'm getting knock!

I'm hoping the gurus at Innovate Motorsports get the firmware updated soon for the DL-32 to enable the triggering of solenoids
so I can set up a 'Knock' light and maybe a Shift light too...and my favorite planned mod, the solenoid that will trigger the flip-down-fake-license-plate at speeds above 55 mph

That is great work !!! The rpm and knock spikes on time. Can you log ignition ?
