Carl,

I haven't seen the difference, but will this set up fit AT's as well as 5 spds?

Yes - thanks Tony - those photos are from a AT install. The AT cars ahve an extra transmission line or two that we had to consider in our design. We ended up with nice room around them and a heat shield to protect them.

Carl,
I am extremely interested in the new system, can't wait until see new HP numbers and listen to some sound files to compare to stock 85 exhaust with the X Pipe, no cats and rear mufler installed. I fear it will be pretty loud with X Pipe and RMB on the '85.
Will it bolt right up to the Ott X-Pipe? Which RMB will it work with and is it available in SS? Keep us posted on tests and what the price will be. Nice work.

Thanks,
Glen McCartney

I should have my prototype unit next week, and while mine is a '91, I'm initially going to run it with X-pipe, high-flow cats and RMB. That is the setup I have now, with the shorty resonators, and it's a smidge too much. My hope is that this will temper it just a bit. I'm going to record and submit wav files to Carl.

It will fit either the stainless steel or the mild steel rear muffler bypass from 928 International.

It is made to fit up to the stock cats on the 85 and later. The manufacturers of X-Pipes (like Motorsport in UT) make their product to bolt up to the stock intermediate pipes. If everybody holds their manufacturing tolerances tight, you should be able to mix-and-match X-pipes on or of and RMB's on or off as you please.

I am taking it to the dyno with stock cats and no x-pipe, just the intermediate pipe and RMB. We already know the HP increase from an X-Pipe - I want to see what the increase is for this second-half to the tailpipe improvement.

Ed reminds us that I am installing it and testing it (with Ed's help) on both a 91 and a 85 to make sure it fits and works well before I start selling them.

Ed,
Will you do "before" and "after" wav files so we can get a sense of the change in sound? Also, I don't find wav files helpful to judge how loud a system is. I figure that depend on how high the listener sets his volume. Can you get a decibel meter to do before and after comparisons so there is an actual measurement of the loudness? I guess I'm asking alot.

I fully intend to do the before and afters with the same ambient conditions and equipment. Yes, it is tough to judge wav files, but at least I thought that the comparo sounds would be helpful. A lot of guys here have or have tried to X to RMB and think it's too loud. Hopefully, and this depends on what the actual results are, everyone can at least get a rough indication. Oh, and I'll add my two cents worth of opinion too. If I can get a decibel meter from someone locally, I'd be happy to add that too.

Thanks, Ed. Subjective opinions are always better than nothing, but hard numbers are tough to argue with. I hope this system meets your expectations all around!

Default The dyno results

Here are the dyno results - before and after - from the 1985 32v test mule.

We gained 28 HP and 35 ft lbs torque.

That's about what we figured - the RMB alone yields about 10 HP, the X-Pipe alone yields about 26 HP. Given the restrictions in the 85/86 exhaust (I posted pics of them above) this is about what we thought we might see.

This is stock manifolds and downpipe and cats, then our new free-flowing "True Dual" pipes after the cats plus a RMB.

I can tell you that my wife and I drove about 1 hour each way to the dyno, and had no trouble carrying on a conversation in the car, or listening to the radio. You could hear the low melodic note of the exhaust, but it was not so loud it was irritating. I recorded the sound at the tailpipe outside the car, and it sounded very nice. A nice bark but not too much bite. I'll try to get that sound file posted as soon as I can.

Ed will get his this coming week and provide his opinion also.

Carl,
You've made another great option available. If you tune an 85/86 32v you should do even better. This dyno sheet is pre SC with a Tom Cloutier exhaust, P&P heads (looking at other 85/86 dyno sheets probably not worth it), and piggyback tuned using a Perfect Power SMT-6 from Louie Ott; 291 rwhp and 289.6 rwtq.

Carl..........excellent results.

Are you now going to bolt on a X and try that for sound and power?

I am out of time with this car - I plan to only finish the SC install and dyno it.

I'm not sure I have time to install a x-pipe in front of it and dyno that independant of the SC unit. I am about 1 hour each way from the good Dyno I use.

I will try to answer all questions as best I can this next week - just be advised I will have very little time at the office or at the keyboard this week. I have a family member in the hospital.

So there is 56 HP to gain on the 32v 85/86 motor by going to the Motorsport x-pipe and 2.5 inch dual exhaust!!
Amazing!.
