Default Wiring Horror story - not for the squeamish

I have been trying to resolve a continuous running fan issue on an early 87 S4 for a customer.
Checked all the usual culprits to no avail.
Well I found two sets of splices hidden under the right hand side of the engine bay.
The wires had heated up due the the resistance and melted through the tape and shorted together. I am amazed it did not result in a fire as the power is direct from the battery.
Re-spliced everything with heavy duty, heat shrink and waterproof connectors.
Resolved the issue.
PO's have a lot to answer for!

Roger I expected to see a smoldering hulk of a car . So was this the result of a "short cut" engine swap ?? Where rather than unplug the wires someone simply cut them ? Y0u have to wonder WHY ?

Good find my friend!
That's how my wiring towards the fuel venting valve looked. My PO actually fried the biggest capacitor in my LH-ECU. The ECU still worked but refused the actuator test. Took John Speak some time to figure this one out.

This looks like the harness that runs in front of the motor, probably choped for a quickie timing belt swap out.
