While headed to work in downtown Washington DC this morning, I did like many city dwellers have to do from time to time and bend a few traffic laws. Well, while making a U-Turn I got a little closer to the floorboard than I realized and before I knew it was like a scene from the Dukes of Hazard . Now the law abiding side of me said “back off of the gas man" but the other side of me said "LET THIS MONEY PIT GIVE A RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT". This was hands down the most enjoyable commute to work that I have had in quite some time. The Monte Carlo SS that was behind me in traffic could only look and wonder "why am I not feeling like a muscle car right now".

I just had to share this experience with my fellow 928ers all over the world just because it felt sooooo good! Thanks for allowing me to ramble.

I have to say that just because your tires aren't gripping the road doesn't mean you're 'out of control'. There is such a thing as a controlled slide, skid or power slide.

They're also a lot of fun! I don't know if it's against the law, but if you're not exceeding the speed limit or endangering anyone else, I don't see the harm.

 

Rockoosi, that does make for an exciting commute. I've done it myself many times, sideways through a turn and drift it out while on the throttle.

I've seen a lot of these shows on SpeedTV where they have Drift contests and such with the Ricers being the main cars of choice (240SX to be exact). I'll bet a 928 would be a great car for drifting, as long as you could control the throttle.

 

Hmmmm, Twin Turbo drifter. I like!

There is no thrill that can equal that of a four wheel CONTROLLED slide....or perhaps no excitement quite like a near-death uncontrolled slide. I much prefer the former but have experienced both.

Amen to that H2. There is a downhill and probably 45 degree turn at a local track that I hit at about 85mph in the 911, about 50% of the time, the turn exit results in a 4 wheel slide at about 90mph. Serious pucker, and serious fun. The name of the turn is Ricochet, aptly named.

BTW, yes, I've spun there at my first DE. You've not lived until you've spun a Porsche at 90mph.

 

Is there anyone - anywhere that has not had their 50-50 distribution not give them a surprise 360? My S4 will make a turn in the city off and to a 2 lane at 51, not 52 mph.

It's all about knowing your car, and it sounds like you've got yours nailed.

I haven't had mine get away from me yet, but I've been surprised here and there at a little fishtail.

This weekend I was merging into traffic on wet roads, just a little more gas at 60 than I probably should have been using and the car started to drift ever so slightly off the crown of the road WHOOPS! I guess I could use some better tires.

 

Naw, just stomp on the pedal and turn the steering wheel into the drift. . . . . woohoo ! ! !

 

Rodney, try the High Performance Driving Clinic. Trust me, it doesn't compare. After going on the track once, driving on the street is a little boring. You won't be able to wipe the grin off your face nor stop thinking about every corner for weeks.

 

I believe that most spins occur, at least they do in a 911-probably in most cars, because a driver gets anxious about their speed in a turn, and lets off, even slightly. That's all it take to upset the balance and to lose traction. You can usually feel it when you're losing traction at the rear, and typicall more throttle will plant the car and "hook it up". It's a great feeling, and at tomcat states, a Driver's Education event will allow you to experience such thrills and improve your skills in a "safe" environment.

The other cool thing about DE's, is you don't worry about flashing blue and red lights in your mirrors.

 

Running a little late, and oops, my bad, did a small slide on the way, the car is so controllable though doing these...(should I admit this while selling my car?)

 

I assume that ALMOST ANY Porsche on the planet has been thrashed or driven in anger at least once. I'd think buyers would figure that out too.

 

I go sideways everytime I take the sharks out. What a rush! I was buying rear tires once per year until I got control of my right foot!
