Zuffenhausen 928 Line Photos

Great pictures! Really surprising too on the lack of body protectors along the way with the workers being all over the cars just after a paint job. The line almost looks like when I do my own work in my garage, although I'm on a much smaller scale.
So Edgy01, I guess you like the 928 too? Nice 997 by the way, sweet color combo.

Thanks for the first hand insight into the origin of our cars!
Todays JIT manufacturing clearly minimizes the human element you had captured .... even to the guy with his tongue hanging out looking at the ladies in the shot above ...

Here's a Sahara Beige 928 working its way through, still awaiting interior work.
The 928 is a great car,--many years ago I was fortunate to meet Tony Lapine and discuss the car with him.
Here they are beginning to prep the cars for glass installation.
Notice outside the factory windows the many Porsches sitting in the storage yard, awaiting shipment.
A Mocha Brown working its way through.

Fitting of interior and glass proceeds with this Chocolate Brown 928 from MY78 in October 1977. Fingerprints abound in this scene from 1970s manufacturing practices. Today's factory line has nearly every painted surface protected with special templates which remain throughout its assembly.
The last step in manufacturing is headlight adjustment, and then the automatic garage door opens and out runs another 928 to the neighboring streets.

Dan,
This is great stuff. I can't believe they just let you walk through and take these. Are you a professional photographer? These don't look like your average snapshots, they're all well framed and exposed.
I can't stop scrolling through them.
BTW- I can't seem to get to the link in your signature, I don't know if it's broken or if the problem is on my end.

After road tests which could be as many as 25 miles the 928 returns to the garage section of the production line for adjustments. It looks no different than any other Porsche garage from the 70s and 80s, other than every car is a 928! Happy 30th birthday 928!

WHAT FASCINATING HISTORY IS CAPTURED . . .
Dan,
What fascinating historical images, just from the mere changes in production regulations, as you mentioned, then add 'the lost model' component, so dear to all of us shark-o-philes -- just an awesome historical photo collection. Thank you very much for taking the time to share here.
Funny, in the mocha brown car, it looks like there's a factory installed passenger!
BTW, ditto re: inability to access the photo link in your signature. Thirsty for more of your work, I too, tried, but was unsuccessful. Hopefully that can be remedied so we can view more of your fine work.
Just curious -- what model did you buy in '77?
Thanks Again For Sharing!

Most interesting thread of 2007 so far. I heard they made 20 928's a day? That would be 1 every 30 minutes in a 10 hour day. Does anyone know if this is true?
