If you had free reign...what would you have changed?
X2 Keith,

I'd like to know if there is anything they would like to have added/changed that was 'off the table' (verboten?).

Why did you make subsequent year cars more complex, but not fix the known inherent problems?

I would still have to say the decision to downsize the engine reduce power in light of the first global energy crisis created a POOR first impression. Just think Holbert could have done the world record speed run at Bonneville in 1977 instead of 1987. The 928 with 300-350 HP and the higher torque of a 5.5 or 6 liter would have blown away all the "exotic" cars of that era YET still been a drivable comfortable air conditioned real car ! The complaints about too heavy for most are easily offset by another 100-150 horsepower and added torque. (just ask the supercharger guys ) The charcterization of the 928 as a GT like that is something different from a "sportscar" would have been a mute point in light of the awsome performance potential. Sure the Euro S in 1980 improved the performance but was too little too late and not available to the U S market , like they say you only get ONE first impression...

Why was there never an attempt to get rid of the vacuum actuators in the heating and AC unit? Just look at the 944!!!

Exactly. I had a way better climate control in an '86 Lincoln than my '87 928, which cost 2x as much at the time This is really my only area of complaint, everybody ends up having problems with the vacuum actuators, and the climate control itself just isn't good compared to climate controls available at the time. Plus, they could have just not done the whole rear a/c and put in something better. This I just don't get.

Did you ask "WTF?" when AMC came out with this in 1975?

go to the 30th anniversary event planned in June in Germany and you can ask them yourselves...

At the 928 25th anniversary event their answer to the question about width was they had to fit onto the then currently available car transporters...

Sterling there is a lot to be learnt from the Recaro seats porsche opted to instal into later 928's. Early 928 seats were all-porsche, very lightweight yet very comfortable. Just like 911's; 356's and all other porsches had employed for decades. However at some point the Recaro rep must have done someone a favour somewhere because the seats that porsche started installing were INSANELY heavy. To me, the weight of these additional seats signal a very real change in philosophy at porsche. i almost have to believe that they were adding a weight penalty for some reason. You simply cannot make a car seat any heavier. And the weight of it is almost all in the bottom frame which would likely be able to stand up to a meteoric direct hit. There is no chance a porsche installer would not have complained big-time at having to instal such a ludicrously heavy item into a Porsche. i don't see it.

Remember it's about cornering and such too, the idea that 6 litres was being planned .... I don't see that as the point

You know, when I first saw pictures of the Pacer, I thought it looked pretty cool (for the 70s). Then I saw one in person - UGH! The proportions were all wrong.

If I were at a dinner party, I would ask what it was like to go from the 911 to a front engined water cooled machine. I would also ask what did you learn from the experience. But John V is right. WTF were you thinking about when you designed the crank ? It is just too strange to justify with the low RPM argument. Too silly in a great engine.
