Hey guys,

I'm heading to NJ to pick up my new '88 S4 tomorrow. After a short visit with family and friends I'll be driving it home to the Seattle area. I can't wait.



Should be hitting the road Monday or Tuesday am, heading down towards Memphis, then going straight west on I40, the up through Bakersfield towards I5, then up the coast. If I have time and if the weather allows I may sidetrack to the Grand Canyon, and perhpaps a bit of 101 in Cali.

I'll try to check in once or twice if I can find easy wireless connectivity.

ps: how can I make an offering to the shrine? Will a shot held high among friends and a prayer to the patron saint of 928's do it?

I-40. I did that once. Goes across Northern Texas. Old Route 66. Depending on the weather outlook, you might want to head down 30 out of Little Rock, then onto 20 on the other side of Fort Worth. You pick up I-10 before El Paso and head up into Las Cruces. Gives you a chance to see Carlsbad Caverns there, if you haven't, which I HIGHLY recommend, plus some of the most godforesaken country we have anywhere, on the way through the middle of Texas. If you do, a stop in Colorado City, 25 miles West of Sweetwater (Hi, Willie!) will open your eyes. I hadn't seen sheet metal and cardboard houses in America before I visited there. Adds a bit to your trip, but you get to see more of America. You can still stop in Bakersfield too!

BTW, make sure you hit the road early to enjoy the drive. I have made the trip, and my mistake was getting on the road late, and missing some good scenery.

Here are some items to add to your checklist before leaving:

1) Valentine One

2) 928 Road Help list

3) a bra or clear bra if you pass through I-10 past El Paso and through Arizona; lots of sand on the road. My car looks like it was sand blasted on the bumper after the last trip on that road.

If you pass through the Bay Area on the way up 101, stop and we will have a reason to have a fun run. Watch for painted lines along 101 and watch for bears around Santa Barbara.

4) Lots of fresh donuts if the V-1 fails. And remember 1-800-300 BAIL if the donuts fail.

Long trip....get a portable sirius radio....it really helps.........just some advice from my Seattle to Atlanta trip experience.
(I think the cheapie I bought was $35 plus activation)
I wish I did the more scenic route you have planned, but I did not have the time.

I wish I were going. What Bill Ball said, and check weather in Flagstaff while you are in Texas and can detour farther south. Flagstaff is 7500 feet and I think the Grand Canyone is 8000+. Northern Arizona is damn cold in the winter. My favorite area of the country, but cold and snowy.
