Unhappy 928: "I wish there was..."

I wish that there was a parts cross reference somewhere that would show alternate parts and cross reference numbers for our 928s. For example...the Anchor motor mounts; the Audi relays and boots, hoses, O2 Sensors, fuel pumps, heater parts from Audi, and on and on. Sometimes the replacement parts are more modern and better than OEM. As I look over my 928s, I keep seeing Audi, Bosch, VW, etc. markings along with the Porsche. Another example, the MAF used on 928s reportedly is identical on some other cars (BMW?)...if so, that would be great to know. Doesn't Bosch make the same part for numerous vehicles? I find it hard to believe that every model is completely unique.

When I was building street rods, I was amazed at the interchangeability of parts among vehicles...but I'm not aware of a place where these are recorded for the 928.

Any other 928 wishes?

Harvey

Harvey-
My local import parts shop has had cross references for many, many parts I've ordered. Often they show up in VW or Audi boxes, or have Bosch part numbers instead of Porsche ones. Prices are un-Porsche-like as well. All I've ever supplied is the Porsche part number, and their computer does the rest. They're part of the "Parts-Plus" chain, sorta. If you don't have any luck with a local shop, let me know and I can give you their phone number. They used to ship parts to me when I lived in Pullman.
One other thought: a lot of "unofficial" cross references have been discovered by owners, and I don't think anyone will find that information outside of Rennlist or the 928 email list.

I pray my tach/fuel gauge issues will be addressed with the used warning brain I ordered from 928 Int'l yesterday.

...and my t-belt job goes smooth.

...and I get a tax return large enough to cover the costs of an x-pipe and high flow cats.

'87 $4 5 speed.

Default A database would be nice...

Andrew...that's really good information to know. I wish I had access to that kind of database. Maybe Rennlist will have such data in one spot some day although I suspect that wouldn't make some vendors too happy. However, some 928 vendors sell both the Porsche brand and the alternative.

Fraggle,

On your '87 5 speed I hope that it doesn't take more than a prayer and new brain to resurrect it. Anything to do with brains is iffy. I hope it works for you. The inner ignition switch on my '85 caused me all kinds of fits with the dash lights until I replaced it. Those switches don't last forever. For me it's a preventative maintenance part.

I've done two t-belt jobs now and I always get nervous when i first crank the car. Too many moving parts that have to line up perfect. But there are an awful lot of 928s with a lot of miles on them so the system works when in sync.

Boise? I've heard of that. Isn't that where BJC just won the Siesta Bowl? Just kidding, the BSU game was maybe the best college game to be played by anyone in years. We're so jealous it's killing us. It's not all bad though since your win even caused the U of I to get money. Our team is in a world of hurt. No light at the end of the tunnel right now. You know it's getting bad when Moscow starts cheering for Boise State! I wish....

I wish you well.

The warning brain only controls the warning lights. If you unplug it, all the gauges (and the undervolt light) will still function. If anything, it's more likely a problem with the old circuit foil on the back. I know the one on my '86 is suspect (same part 85-88). If you get a new one, I'd get the white plastic circuit foil/gauge holder, too, it's crazy cheap (~$15).

I only noticed today that there's info in the other model PETs that's not in the 928 specific (PDF) versions. Eg. wire terminals, rubber boots are in the 944 PET!

My car is already a stealth car. It's in the budget under 'other'.

I wish there was a track I could drive on within a 100 miles of here.

I wish there was a climate control head that wasn't so dated looking. Everything else in the car looks pretty good.

I wish that TBF was non existent, that LSD came standard with all 928 and only 5 speeds were produced
