I'd be curious to know its condition upon arrival. As stated, I'm partial to this year and am hoping that the OB still has some legs.

 

How do you "buy" a car with no title ? How do you part out a car which you can not prove you OWN ? And at this point in time how do you know it is not a stolen car or belongs to a leinholder (bank) ? There are many good reasons why cars have titles very few for one not to have one.

In Florida (as, I understand, in MOST states) - you can't even GIVE a car to the salvage yard without a title!!



Word of caution - i wouldn't put a SINGLE DOLLAR into that car until you have a VALID title in hand!!!

 

The last titled owner will have to apply for a replacement for lost title and then transfer it to you. There are also some companies that specialize in coming up with relacement titles. Look in Hemmings for these companies.

I called my other neighbor that is a PA state cop- Not reported stolen.
The car is a product of a divorce

I applied for Ny to send me title info and Registration info since the car was new. It was a NY state car since new.

OK good to see you have done your homework but what do you do when the title comes back as owned by Joe Smith and you have no way of finding him no way to get him to sign off on his "ownership" and by that time the people who sold you the car with a bill of sale have moved . And quite frankly parting out a car without FIRST submitting the title to the state as a car to be junked is illegal in most states but so are a lot of things... Over the years we have had people try to sell us cars which they did not own they thought it would just disappear in parts. One guy sold Mark bits and pieces then turned his car in to his insurance company as stolen ... ! He earned himself Free room and board from the State of California for his efforts... Buying cars without a clear title just adds to the risk and hopefully the price you paid includes a big discount for you to accept some of that risk. I hope it all works out GREAT for you ! As a licensed state regulated dismantler (junkyard) we MUST submit the title to the State of California and wait several days before actually pulling the cars apart (unless the car already has a junked title) . And as mentioned the local scrap metal yard will NOT accept a car shell without good proof of ownership just to keep bad guys with a tow truck from dragging in "abandoned" cars...off the street !

No lien - GOOD....Not stolen....GOOD...BUT - you're still going to have to find the P.O.!

I had bought a 944 a couple of years back and had lost the title (which I actually had at one time - but hadn't transferred it into my name, yet)...I was VERY lucky in that the previous owner still lived at the address on the old title, and was kind enough to help me get a replacement document. It still took a couple of MONTHS and a couple of hundred $$!

Even IF you can track down the P.O., he has to be willing to help you out. This often involves a trip or two to DMV in the state where the old title was issued...and/or notary...and/or....$$$$

 

You can also find them on the web. One of the more recognized is International Title Service. (http://www.its-titles.com/). Their prices for that car's title start at $300...PLUS the costs of the actual title replacment to NYS.

Well it appears things have changed a bit since I was in the wrecking business in California. I wanted to get a title on an abandoned car. I took the VIN and license plate number to the DMV. They run it and it comes back as no longer being in thier computer. So what to do? I call the lien company and they tell me no problem. Just give them the numbers and $30 and they will do a lien sale. It seems when a car is considered "low value" and has not been registered for a while the DMV just starts up a new title. Fortunately I knew the old owner and he signed a certificate of a lost title. With this, a verification and $113 I am new a new owner with a new title. The best part is the fee schedule. It cost less to get a new title than if I had to pick up the past back fees. What a savings.

It seems the state of California has grown much more liberal in getting old cars into the hands of people who want them. If fact, you buy a car and do not register it for a few years you can probably save money by creating a new title. Go figure - it was a surprise to me. In the process you might even be able to expunge salvage from a title as well. Further if you ask for title only the car does not have to go through smog until you are ready to register it. Also once you create a title this way you can then turn it back into the state and notify them you are wrecking the car. All legal and very much above the board.

 

Several years ago, I sold a truck with the pink slip (clear title, no bank loans).

Couple weeks later, the buyer shows up at my door saying he was photocopying the pink slip and left it in the copy machine. When he returned the pink slip was gone.

He had already visited the DMV and had the correct forms. Luck for him, I signed the cert of lost title.

 

You will enjoy your 84S. I got one in sad shape awhile back, but now she is really coming alive. A lot of hours is better than a lot of Dollars. What a fine car.
