5 Speed rebuild post - Process pics & tips (G28-05)

Sorry to drag this thread back up, but I was trying to duplicate your spring procedure to allow the transmission to center on the 2-3 gate. My bends are not as nice as yours, but for now it seems to work. I'm happy with it right now, although I hope it stays on.
However, when I put everything back together, I found a separate issue. The shifter didn't want to rotate into the 1-R gate. The "U-spring" seems to be catching the vertical tab on the shift finger. Based on your pics it looks the same. The vertical tab has an indent that the U-spring sits in, but to move into 1-R it has to push it's way out of the tab. Did you have any problems with this?
I just put a shim between the U-Spring and the front of the shift finger to separate them so that the spring doesn't sit in the indent, and it looks good now. But was this a bad idea? I don't see anything else wrong, but it didn't seem like a problem when I took it apart.
Thanks

Yes, I guess I essentially disabled that R-1 mechanism. It just felt like it was way too hard to get into that gate, by hand anyways. Maybe it would feel better in the car, but the spring should be good enough to keep me away from that gate when needed.
Ahhh, another pin for the spring. I like it. I'll have to be careful drilling that out now that everything is back together.
