radiator end tanks oil/coolant mix (MANY of these)
radiator hoses
euro distributor silly sync belt
oil cooler hoses rupture
heater valve silly hose rupture
thermostat failure
plug/coil wire failure
MAF failure
85 airbox explosion/hood dent from leaky injectors
crank case vent oil ingestion
car fire from rear dome light which has all electrodes exposed and fits into the body (metal)
thrust bearing failure leading to engine destruction
tie rod failure leading to car playing frogger across lanes unpredictably (try this and pee your pants)
steering rack pissing failure
cat fire from bad ignition
water in intake leading to bad ignition leading to fire

Nothing like a good fire to make sure the old pump is working.
I bet at this point you are more than a little more inclined to do a lot more of preventive maintanace than most of us.
On the other hand your sure seem to know where a lot of weak points are at.
Thanks for the list, I also would like to know about the light replacement with the VW part.

Bump - thats two of us who want to know which VW the alternative better dome light is from.
I know this is not really the thread for it but wasn't there a thread a while just for Alternate parts.
like the knock sensors are the same as Audi 80 90 A4 100 A6 - but that's an easy one as it's just a case of buying the bosch part no. as the big three do and I wouldn't take that business from them to some other vendor.
What I would think could be useful - especially those not in the US who have to factor in shipping on stuff, would be parts that are similar enough - eg there must be another car that uses an AC condensor that is near enough the same size that could be fitted with only pipework changes needed ? or another example there are many GM (Vauxhall) cars in the UK that use an identical fan(bar the electrical connector) to the S4+ fans - normally available from the scrapyards for around $10-$15

Check TT rear clamp bolt tightness on manual cars, put glue to it and tighten to +10% torque (88Nm). If it gets loose TT center shaft will try to jump bore teeth and in process will snap off one of three pieces on input shaft front end. Usually one of two which have clamp bolt groove. Same can happen if gearbox and TT are separated or joined together inproperly, meaning TT isn't absolutelly straight. New shaft is between $1000 and $1500 as it includes 5th gear. Used costs between $500 and $750 at 928 Intl when they have them. It is possible to fix shaft by welding piece back to it.
One local car has this problem now. Gearbox hasn't been off in at least few years so bolt must have worked itself loose. Relatives car suffered same thing few years ago. Welded shaft has hold for now at least.

Is their an Alternate part to replace the 928 unit?
For the meantime can it be disconected in some way?
Thanks for the tip

Soft off is a separate function, the stock light can be replaced with the better (very expensive) part with the same as stock functionality. Soft off is a cool feature though.

Many 928s probably could reasonably be brought up from good condition to great condition, particularly if you buy one or so extra donor cars so as to keep the overall costs down. It's pretty sad when some great cars are parted out for more than they might bring in a restored state. As some have mentioned, someday, the parts cars we are seeing now will be sought by Porsche restorers...much like the 356s and SCs are now. Has to happen...it's too great a car not to. If I had lots of storage space, it might not be a bad thing to collect and store while prices are down?
My apologies to Heinrich if I've got any of this wrong.

Harvey is right, the failures I have experienced are all the result of lack of maintenance on cars I have bought and owned. Godzilla has suffered no failures since I brought him up to snuff. I do tend to not spend the type of money Harvey spends, which means I get to deal with restoring someone else's backlogged maintenance. And yes Blown, a cat fire (twice) is a funny thing, even funnier when you're aiming the hose right at it because you could anticipate it.

Heinrich...not to change the thread topic (oops! Maybe a new thread is warranted?) but sometime it would be enlightening to hear your "take" on the relative merits of each model/year of 928 that you've owned. That is, do you have a favorite? (Gzilla?...why?) Or does each year have its unique charm?
