Default Outside temperature sensor GTS ( in mirror)

Is the outside temprature sensor ( the one mounted in the driver side mirror available ) used by any other cars other than P-cars. Are they avalable from our suppliers? Mine reads -40 F or C all the time.

Sounds like an open or short in the wiring. Whats common in temp sensors is a reverse biased diode, so you might be able to fabricate a sensor if you know what its using now.

So that would be an unbiased...diode?

Pet # 928 641 142 00 - I've had the mirror of and there no signs of a broken wire there. Do the replacement GTS style mirrors that other RL use to up-grade their mirrors come with the sensor included?

If the sensor is good, there probably is a short somewhere in the wiring - most likely in the harness that goes from the door into the cabin through that black plastic tube. Those wires flex a lot, and do become brittle over time. I'm not sure where the demarkation is for the sensor, but a few minutes with the wiring diagrams should tell you where to look. Then a few quality moments with your trusty multimeter and the problem will hopefully be identified. Hope this helps.

I thought most temperature sensing devices used a simple resistor that changes resistance depending on temperature in a linear way?
Either a NTC or PTC (negative or positive temperature coefficient resistor).
Isn't diodes used to only allow current flow in one direction, normally used for protection?
Find a good one and measure resistance over different temperatures and then find a similar temperature curve part to use in it's place.
But these parts rarely fail, most lightly it is like Andrew says a brake in a cable somewhere.

It is an NTC thermistor. Values - 750 ohms at temp 60deg C; 6000 ohms at 10deg C; 16500 ohms at minus 10 deg C.

Not used here, but this is how a diode measures temperature, http://www.thermengr.com/TB/TB-02.pdf

I just ordered a sensor from the dealer, they are not to expensive. Last year I had also changed out my LCD clock on my 944 and replaced it the the 968 temp LCD. In both cases I did not have to use a diode.

An open will cause the display to have no reading at all - blank. Not sure if a short would do the same.

In any case, they're readily available, and I just bought a sensor for $25 from one of the big three.

Now.......if you tell me how to get the * symbol indicating freezing temperatures to work properly, I'd be grateful. Mine shows that big * all the time.
