Stands of the type in your picture were outlawed for sale in the US quite a while ago. We get to use cast or welded-frame stands now
Why were that type of jack stand - tube with holes in welded tripod base - outlawed ?

I have 4 of both types - the tube type and the ratchet type. I only ever use the ratchet type on the 928 as the back up set because the head of then is not suitable for any of the possible places you can support a 928. I am modifying my tube type to have a flat plate with a "****" on top to fit the jack mounting points.

I can wholeheartedly endorse the recommendation not to use the sparewheel jack for anything other than changing wheels on the road. I had to use it to fix a leaking clutch hose (me under car) by the side of the road in Germany. Definitely very scary even with a full size spare wheel under the car for "safety".
