Default Turbo w/ FM intercooler set up (turbo set up build)

Alright,
Ive accumulated most of the parts i need for my Turbo setup that im building for my 86.5.

Im building a set up simular the the current sts style setup availible now. I have a front mount intercooler that i plan to install with this set up via 3" IC tubing. The turbo is a XS power TD05 (evoiii) ported 18G, A/R .70, w/internal wastegate. the intercooler is a JDM sport unit. ill get the demensions later. i have both a blitz and a greddy blow off valves. im using a manual boost controller, and VDO instrumentation. i do not have a timer, or any type of engine management at this time and i may not use it period. The current prom chip is a autothority unit. but will likely need tuning.

Now i have quite a bit of IC tubing with several bend configurations, Any tips for the best routing of the piping? pictures?

Im also concerned about crank case ventalation, and oil, water, lines for the turbo. once again tips, info on your setups, and pictures, if possible.

also the anyone here with boosted 928s (SC and turbo guys) Please tell me about your experieces, any problems? relable boost with stock injectors? fuel pumps? ever lift a headgasket? loose studs? amount of boost where denation occoored?

i expect possible contraversy and ask you to please read the following before posting.

anything you have to post that may aid me in my project is welcome and apretiated . please no flames or aruguments over your perfered method of adding power. I chose to turbocharge mine using my own setup becuase i feel this is best for me, please respect my desision. thanks,

I may also post a build of this project depending on interest.

I will be keeping my eye on this one. I have wanted to put a turbo on my 86.5 for a while now. I have seen the popularity of this type of setup and I think that I want to try it.

I'm contemplating the same thing but not doing the intercooler due to plumbing complexity (1981). Instead, I'll be relying on the partial intercooler effect provided by the pressure piping under the car. I've been looking at compressor and turbine maps for weeks and I haven't come accross the XS-TD05... can you provide a link? Most of the units I found with internal waste gates were not big enough for even my 4.5 liter engine (save one special waste gate ( not made by Garret - fitted to a Garret unit).

With the rear mounted turbo, water cooling the cartridge (on a non-bearing) turbo is not required. Is this a ball bearing turbo? Also, the rear mounting done by STS uses their own scavange pump to bring the oil back to the engine. I spoke to Turbonetics about this (STS uses their Turbos) and Turbonetics does NOT endorse this oiling system, but concedes that STS has been very successful with it.

Please keep us posted.

I'm not sure anyone has fully figured this out yet without going with a dry sump.
Tim and Todd are working on a custom air / oil seperator for the S4's. So far it's working great on the street - some bugs to work out on the track.
Depending on boost, may not be a big issue if the engine is healthy.

Supercharged S4's can handle 9ish psi of boost with stock injectors, pumps, and increased fuel pressure via FMU. Turbo shouldn't be any different. I'm not sure the size injectors on the 85-86. 19lbs on the S4's IIRC.
With the Shark Tuner now available - you have many more tuning options open to you.

I've seen some high HP 951's do this (there is a thread on a 500+hp 951 currently in discussion about this in the turbo forum). Again boils down to how healty your car is. If you have 150,000 miles on the head gasket, may not last very long under boost.

Detonation can happen at 1 pound of boost if you are not feeding the engine the proper amound of fuel. N/A cars die of detonation to. Todd has pushed one of his motors to 24psi (951 pistons, other than that a stock 87 engine with boost). He was running stronger pumps, larger injectors & increased fuel pressure.

Good luck & let me be the first one to say:

I am contemplating doing this as well. I have a spare engine to play with so not too worried about what will happen to it.

Any and all information would be appreciated.

For sure pics so we can steal all your good ideas.

'85-'86 32Vs have stock 24lb injectors. They will be adequate till at least 10-12LB of boost. As stated above cooling the turbo is not really necessary especially in a rear mount setup. There are guys on the 951 forum that run large upgraded turbos off the manifold with no coolant lines running to the turbo. Turbo timers are nothing more than a ignition key timer that shuts the engine off after a pre set interval and is not really necessary to have. Just let the car idle for 30sec before shutting it down.

The SC setup I have is as simple as it gets. For fuel management all I needed was an FMU to supply the engine with enough fuel under boost. No intercooler and only a couple OEM bypass valves to relieve the pressure when the throttle plate is closed. Last May one of my injectors failed, causing a lean condition in one of the cylinder and as a result the head gasket got blown out. I will be taking the head off in a few weeks but before that the system worked fine. Crank venting will be an issue that you will have to address. There is some information on how some people solved this on an S4 but there isn’t much out there for the early 32Vs. I built my own oil separator and you can see it on the build page. I’m still running a set of Authority chips and they have nicely adapted to the SC.

You can see the entire build here: http://norcal928.org/DIYSC/index.htm

By all means, please record your build and when you have time, put together a simple webpage. It will be very helpful for others and save you from constantly explaining the same thing over and over.
