Reading this thread
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/318394-any-one-tried-these-led-lights-out-yet.html
got me thinking that it would be nice to ditch the stock hi level brake light and fit a more discrete LED light that doesn't obscure so much of the rear window
anyone done this either DIY or just bought one ready made ?

Jon,
You're going to need sum real bright LED's.
Pulled my 3rd brake bulb to see what it is and it's a 25W incandescent.
Just tried one of the newfangled Luxeon 3W brake bulb. It's nearly as bright as the
5W 1157 incandescent. So you're going to need a lot of LED firepower to get a 25W equivalent.
The brakes on the 928 is waaay to good for dim brake lights.
A double row of LED's at the top edge of the rear screen might work. The US GM cars like Cadillac run an array of LED's for their brake lights.
I don't need to scan that much of the rear screen for police cruisers to be bothered by the 3rd brake light. Yet.
And it seems that forum members have found the black rectangle on the glass where the 3rd light attaches is not that easily removed. Advice was to swap in an early 928 rear hatch glass that did not come with the 3rd light.
Hope summer's going nicely.
Oh and Merry Surfing Christmas to you.

Hi Ernest
Merry Xmas to you also - at least your weather is more seasonal. It's looking like rain here for Xmas day - so much for the barby on the beach LOL.
My rear screens don't have the black rectangle - hi level brake lights were a compulsory addition for import to NZ. But the lights I have are the same size as stock.
I am thinking a double row of (9 top and 9 bottom) 5mm Superbrights. power one row from one side and the other row from the other side to avoid confusing the bulb failure unit. Looks like I'll have to make my own PCB

I figure that I can stop faster than 99% of the people behind me, so I'd like to give as much warning as possible.

Wish I could turn my whole rear screen into a Big Red light to keep them cars waaay off my bumper cover.
Got my Luxeon 3W from these guys.
www.autolumination.com
The have bare bulb shells and bulb shells with wiring for those DIY types.
They got sockets for the 44mm festoon bulbs used in the interior.
Wonder if a string of those would fit on the top of the rear screen. Them 9-LED 44mm bulbs are decently bright. Got one ultra white one on the rear hatch and that lights up the back area nicely.
Used regular tower LED bulbs in the rear parking lights. Luxeon 3W 1157 for the brake bulb. Want the brake lights to be the most obvious.
Tempted to get a pair of the 1157 Luxeons for the front marker lights. The front markers relies on the reflector to light the whole light and the Luxeon just throws a bright dot on the marker lens.
Awaiting pics of your LED adventure, Jon.
Q, I want rear lasers on my shark. And swap that ejection seat for real sport seats.

I'll have more to say about this in a few days; still have a few kinks to work out before being able to advocate their use.

Looks good Ed, looking forward to seeing what you did. I"m very interested in getting LEDs in at least the brake positions.

That's a trick setup!
Have you given any thought to using LEDs to illuminate the P O R S C H E reflector strip on the GTS rear bumper? That's one mod I'd really like to do but don't have the skills to pull it off.

The GTS rear panel is has the red clear part glued to an opaque grey plastic base.
Don't think the clear red panel would work will enough as a light guide to allow holes drilled into the base and stuffed with red led to not look spotty. A guess here.
If the red panel could be seperated from the base with no damage, then I would think a red luminescent strip all the way across the GTS panel might light it up well.
Cleaned up the reflector on my brake lights and the 3W LED looks a lot closer to the incandescent brake bulb. But the LED dot still shows up brighter than the light off the reflector.
Ed S., did you have to defeat the bulb check module?

It's been crazy busy lately, so I just haven't had time to complete this to my satisfaction; that's why I'm not ready to completely promote the LEDs yet.
