Is it safe to use fuel injector cleaner in my 928?
I searched the archives, but found little info on this topic. My 1983 runs fine, no problems, but thought cleaning the injectors might give the car a little more power and better fuel economy. I have heard some cars should never use injector cleaners, and I had a problem with a '73 911 I had that is believed to be caused by injector cleaner (it gummed up the injectors and the car wouldn't run). The car won't be driven much in the next couple months, so this is something I may do in the spring. Anyone have any luck with it.

Sure, just use the good stuff. Best "over the counter" fuel injector cleaner i have run across is made by Lubro Moly and is called Jectron. They also have a valve cleaning product called Ventil Sauber. I use both regularly. Cost less than $5 a can here. Next best i have used was made by RedLine. My AMG used to love that stuff till I switched to the Lubro Moly products. I have also heard people like the Techron, but from my experience, the LM products are better.
Thanks

We have had several reccomendations for StaBil as a cleaner lately. This might be just the thing for you - put in a heavy dose and run it for a few miles, then leave it in during storage.

I've read those same comments about the Stabil, but they make no claims of that sort on the bottle, just to keep fuel from going bad during storage. I used Techron myself and it did "something" immediately.
What I would be concerned with is that many shops, especially smog repair, have "injector" cleaners that attach to the fuel rails and run some kind of concentrate directly through the injectors with the motor running.
For a modest price you can have a set of injectors ultrasonically cleaned, so why not just pull them and do the job right? Getting a set of flow matched injectors is also appealing to me.

Stoddard solvent is ......
CAS Number 8052-41-3
Major Category Solvents
Synonyms; Dry cleaning safety solvent; Mineral spirits; Petroleum solvent; Spotting naphtha; [Pocket Guide] Texsolve S; Varsol; [ATSDR Case Studies # 33]
Category Refined Petroleum
Description ; Colorless liquid with a kerosene-like odor.Stoddard solvent is a mixture of straight and branched chain parraffins (48%), naphthenes (38%) and aromatic hydrocarbons (14%).The odor threshold is 1 to 30 ppm. [ACGIH]
Sources/Uses ; Stoddard solvent has been used as a paint thinner and general purpose industrial solvent. It has been used in dry cleaning. [ACGIH]
Comments ; Stoddard solvent and other petroleum distillates (VM & P naphtha and kerosene) can cause anesthesia, slowing of reflexes, and dermatitis. Stoddard solvent may contain n-hexane with the potential to cause peripheral neuropathy. [LaDou, p. 523-4] With regard to potential liver injury, fatty infiltration may be seen after heavy exposures to petroleum distillates, but "frank necrosis is uncommon." So simply mineral spirits ?? About the only industry with higher margins that fuel additives has to be "energy drinks" like Redbull which is aptly named

Says right on the front of the bottle that it's also a fuel injector cleaner.
