I'd be really careful about the use of chemicals for this. Some of the windshields have a plastic coating on the inside surface and I am thinking thay you may not want to begin peeling that off or melt it.

Acetone should go right through a plastic painter drop cloth. Careful with that too.

Only euro models (if any) have the plastic coating on the inside.

My '87 would be fine with the acetone method. In fact, my daughter tore it off at one point without issue....

I tried acetone and many other things - mine was quite immune...

Ed told me his trick. When I replaced my windshield with a stock unit that came with the button attached - the installer showed me the trick - he had a pair of needle nose channel locks on the tab and heated the metal base of the tab with a roaring butane torch for about 2 seconds - twisted the tab and it came right off... No fuss - no time for the glass to heat. Dr Bobs idea of a foil heat shield is a good idea too for the less experienced - this guy was good though - it was off before I hardly realized he had started!!

Roger be quick!

"Roger be quick"
Thats what my wife says!!!

I will be trying the quick method this weekend and will let you all know the outcome.

Where is the best place to buy a new windshield?

If you want the windsheild to have the P logo in it then buy it from the dealer.

I hear italian's make the best glass, but that was 5 years ago, not sure if that still holds true. But stay away from mexican made, its typically thinner and will pit allot easier.

Not true. I know of a lister with a U.S. spec '88 S4 that has a plastic coated windshield. It is original as far as we can tell.

every time I have removed the base I just put the mirror on the tab, bend the mirror arm out of the way and give a tap from the top down with a tiny hammer, comes off no problem and as long as your blow runs with the glass it wont break.

I stand corrected! I thought it was a DOT rule about the pastic on the windshields.

Well I tried the small hammer trick and now have a smashed windscreen.
Was very careful and the mirror base did come of but the glass cracked like a spiders web.
