Default SoCal bidding on wrecks

Not my intention to skip list sponsors etc, but I know a few people on the list have bought there own parts cars, and it isn't without a touch of greedy hope that I find a 928 in a pick a part type place where I could spend a couple hours and take home a wagon load of spare parts for little coin. Anyway I did a little surfing last night.

Two 928's showed up at SoCal auctions that are open to public bids;

84 5 spd 75k miles $3700 current bid, left rear clip catching the back of the door, smacking the wheel sideways, and about a foot into the bumper, but it is a sweet looking from photos gold on maybe linen (it was 2 am that I was looking). This is at the Panorama City auto auction.

88 S4, about $5k, but I don't recall more details (ie it didn't look that good).

I have no space, so insane of me to be looking, so I will just add it to my symptom list.

I am sure Jim and Mark knew about these before they were ever posted. They must have insiders at the auction houses looking for specific cars that come through.

My guess is that Mark knows about them and has no interest, price too high, these are builders not parts cars. Another guess is that Mark only buys a few of the available cars, mostly they are new parts these days.

Sorry on the no links, was too late at night, next time I surf and don't want to hoard it for myself I will try to post them. Sure is easy to see how a bit of space could give you Rogeritis.

There was a early '80s one for sale for a very long time in Simi Valley when was looking for mine (1st half of 2006). It needed a water pump and was presumably non-operation because of that. I think it was about $2200. Never went to look at it though. Maybe it'll show up again.

AH ......"Another guess is that Mark only buys a few of the available cars, mostly they are new parts these days." You could NOT be MORE wrong if you tried !!! WE just bought TWO cars from the EAST COAST . And yes we have "spotters" at the various insurance auctions. With out the USED parts sales 928 International would NOT be in business. The open "public" auctions are open for one reason which is the uniformed public often thinks they can rebuild/save a dead car and will pay more for it on that premise or that they wil be able to sell ALL the used parts. Reality being you may get to sell SOME of the parts and then have to PAY someone to haul away what is left. All the new Porsche dealer parts we sell are primarily sold as a SERVICE the margin on new Porsche parts which WE BUY from a Dealer ( as all Vendors must do ) simply can not support a full service parts business. So to make it perectly clear 928 is a licenced auto dismantler and something like 600 928s have passed through our doors. One was left on our doorstep over the weekend. WE ARE A JUNKYARD ! we just happen to sell new parts as well and rebuilts and oem and aftermarket BUT when it comes to used 928 parts we are number 1 .

928 International is the Porsche of junkyards, not exactly pick a part. Salvage is actually my other hobby, but electronic, not automotive.

There have been a few 928s which ended up at Pick a part. We get calls from a scavenger who makes his "living" buying then reselling higher value items from pick-a- part since they have a one price fits all policy an engine, is an engine ,is an engine .... they do now charge extra to get in the premium lot !

Hi Jim

HTML Code:
which is the "uniformed" public often
so they are all right wing?

Joking apart I did not realise that used parts are such a key part of your business.

I know the margin on factory parts would not keep a church mouse in business!!

I guess that rebuilt parts or parts direct from OEMs are also OK margin wise.

I am always very impressed (and grateful) that you guys can run a business and make a living out of 928 parts.

Actually what Mark I and thought was odd is that danglerb has been to the warehouse more than once and seen all the bits and pieces stacked about and literally hanging from the rafters. What is a surprise to many is that we DO NOT have a large outside lot filled with hulks of old 928s (So. Ca. zoning and EPA etc.) but have taken all cars apart and store the good parts inside the warehouse. We try to save and recycle far more of the 928 than most junkyards would ever consider but we of course KNOW exactly how much new parts cost and what parts fit what years !

I was going by the 928intl web site which said they had dismantled 250 928's, and had no idea its was very old data. I've been poking around salvage yards for a long time, and used to be a regular at Aase Brothers years ago, where they had a warehouse, but also two dozen wrecks in progress in the back.

None of the $2k in parts I have purchased so far were used, so how was I to know, I said "guess". And I did see all the stacks of parts, it just didn't immediately follow in my mind that you sold them, plenty of salvage yards have a certain museum quality to the exhibits.
