OK, thanks. I think I get the mileage thing now.

However, the sheet doesn't seem to do all of the calculations for me. Every routine item is given as maintenance due today (12/29) including items checked as done in q4 2006. It also doesn't place any maintenance due markers into future dates for the routine stuff. It seems to work right for the component failure log, though. Not sure what's going on.

Folks - please make sure that you are beta-testing the 'v7' version and not the original 'v6' version.

Try clicking on the 'calc now' button in cell A:5 to force a full re-calculation. (That's a 'feature' because the full recalc takes an annoyingly long time.)

If you are going to enter a lot of data, then toggle the 'stop calcs' button, enter your data, toggle the 'stop calcs' button, and then hit 'calc now.'

When you change any of the sheet-wide data (e.g. in-service year, log-start year, date today, and ANY mileage, etc.) the sheet will not recalculate all the items.

You are using 'v7' right? It should only 'go on forever' if you hit the 'calc now' button.

When you click on 'calc now' it may take one or two minutes to check the whole sheet.

However, if you just hit 'space' and return in one of the item/quarter cells it should take a second or less.

Note: that there should be nothing in cells in the 'relative' column unless the maintenance item needs to performed relative to the one above it. For instance: Row 65 - Tension check after t-belt R&R.

Folks: I do appreciate the effort of the beta testers. And I will accumulate all the information I get and try to make the sheet better, more bullet-proof, and expound upon the instructions.

Yes, using the "calc now" button seems to have essentially no effect. All of my items are listed as maintenance due today, regardless of where I place a check. It doesn't update anything at any time, at least in the 'routine' or 'periodic' items. The wear items log seems to work, though.

I am using v7.

Very, very weird. I will send you a PM with my e-mail address. Please attach your sheet as it is now to an e-mail to me so that I can look at it.

What version of office are you using? 2000? or 2003? or something else?

Ok. I have looked at Mark's sheet and have confirmed the wacky behavior as well as the calculation getting 'stuck' as described by Ed. This is a case of regression (those of you in the s/w biz know what I mean.)

I will look at this tomorrow, fix it, and as per good SOP develop a regression test suite.

Stay tuned.

Thanks for taking the time on this Dave. This is very timely as I have a need for software fulfilling the mission of tracking past as well as future maintenance on multiple cars. I've downloaded test versions of several on the market programs, and they all seem more like "fleet management software". I really want to find a good program for this task, and I'll be spending a bit of time in the next week evaluating 3 programs, yours included.

Mark, Ed, and anyone playing with this sheet. Make sure - for right now - that you put '0' in for your first quarterly mileage. That will work-around the bug Mark and Ed found.

I've fixed the bug in v8 of the sheet, but I want to do more testing before I upload it. That way, maybe, I won't need a v9...

Dave, it behaves now. One thing I found....after entering my mileage and noting some jobs done this year, I decided to change the dates of "enter service" and "log start". When I did that, it skewed the calendars all up. I changed from what you had to 1991 for enter service and 2006 for log start.

When you say 'skewed' do you mean that the column dates changed so that 2006 was the first year?

The column headings are formulas that are based on those dates you changed.

I assumed that the user would enter those dates first and then not change them once they started entering 'check marks' for service. It made sense to me at the time since it seemed likely that an owner wouldn't discover more service records after they started.

What would you have it do differently?

I have a spread sheet but it lists maintenance as of 20.000 km's and up, still looking for yearly maintenance schedule. Is there a comprehensive latest maintenance schedule somewhere available?

Thanks

Anyone made this work for Open Office 3.3.0? I get some runtime errors and I have zip knowledge of VBA.

I haven't tried. But, I very much doubt it will work in OO, unless it implements all of Excel VBA.
