Default 87 Five Speed in San Rafael CA

I tried to find the thread on this and failed.

Anyway I looked at the car today for a friend who is no longer interested so I thought I would pass on what I saw.

I was pressed for time so I did no more than look at surface things and found enough to advise my friend against the car.

The car is an 87 five speed dark blue metalic with a light tan interior. it has a complete repaint and probably one of the worst i have seen on a 928 - which is saying a lot. The masking is very bad and there is already pealing on the rear bumper. In fact it looks like the rear bumper has been repaired around near the lettering. Given the sloppiness of the paint and masking I am guessing very little prep work was done and the car was probably painted at a cheapie production place. The only way to fix this is to strip the paint and start over.

There was a list of items for the mechanic to check on the seat. Lights that did not work and other issues including considerable oil coming from under the engine. Probably a bad oil pan and if that is bad then so are the mounts. There was oil noted coming from the rack. The engine well looks rough with pealing powder coating and the hood liner torn and hanging. The mechanic said someone hed cleaned the top of the engine recently as the underneath was a mess. I did not get deep into it or hear it run.

The interior was a mess. the carpets are trashed. Overall it looks like it has had a quick dealer detail that did not come out well. The seats have been sprayed dyed and from about 20 feet look pretty good. Get up close and they are dry and cracked. Again a sign of poor or sloppy prep.

One plus is no side moldings. I do not know if these were removed when the car was painted or it came that way. The belly pans and front spoiler are missing.

This was enough for me to recommend my friend not buy the car. My impression is it either had a slavage title at one time and was washed or was wrecked and then the quick fix put on it to turn it for a sale. The saleman was less than forth coming suggesting the car was perfect and just needed a couple of bolts tightened.

If anyone on the list is serious about the car I can go back and give it a closer look. At the $10.5k the dealer is asking the car is at least $2-3K too high. Even then it will take more to clean up the car and it will not be worth much more in the end.

From your description this sounds like a parts car to me. $3k, maybe?
